Anyone out there clean their shotgun hulls before (or after) reloading? Am I alone in wiping them down with a damp cloth before putting them in the box for use? I try to keep as much garbage out of the action as possible.

I have never bothered, unless they were dropped in a mud puddle or something like that. When you volume shoot, it's usually a waste of time. They get sorted when going through the reloader.

If I was on a muddy course I would wash the hulls, other than that I never cleaned one.

Cleaning hulls

Oldnamvet--First of all, kudos for tidiness. I'm sure your old First Sar'nt and your mom would both approve.

Agree with the previous posters--a muddy hull needs cleaning. But I have so many hulls that one that's really cruddy I'd just toss. Having said that, IMHO, wiping hulls never hurts.

Since you give 'em a wipe, I'd do it BEFORE running through the loading machinery. You do it to save crud in the shotgun; why not also save crud in the loader?

A thought--Back when WIN was first introducing the AA hull, they tried to reload 'em to destruction. Win said that the hulls turned completely black but they claimed that they couldn't actually reload them so many times they'd fail because of reloading. Those must have been REALLY dirtied-up hulls, but please to note that Win said they still worked fine. The ad I read said that the Win engineers gave up on trying to find how many loadings an AA would tolerate.

I use the washer.
Tie them up in an old pants leg and throw them in. Try to get 4-5 bags of them to keep it in balance during the spin.

After a dirty shoot , where its a wet sandy clay, i'll take the hulls throw'em all in a pillow case take pieces of a t-shirt and wet the shirt throw that in as well and tie it off and tumble away by hand or put in a dryer. Make sure to tear the shirt into strips! It gets any of the truely nasty stuff!
