I second that suggestion, most belatedly. I suggest a Boxer. I have had 7, or 8. About the time you think they're really a big friendly sissy, something will happen and their reaction to it will amaze you. They can sound awsomely ferocious and they got some big bore inertia in them.

+1 to the dog comments. Take a look at chows. They're a medium sized dog, with a temperment, as well as reputation suited to guard duty. Is that area of your yard fenced?

"Rat dogs"

The other day my 17 lb Rat Terrier chased my neighbor's white 85 lb GSD (still just a puppy) all the way across the two acre pasture between our houses. Totally size blind (not the best survival trait) like the other three RT's we have. He has to be put up in a bedroom when we have company or he will nip. I have no desire to break him of this habit as we have few visitors. All four will alert and are always praised when they do. Not attack dogs, alarm/alert dogs. Plus to us they are absolute velcro petting sponges that fit in a lap perfectly. All are rescues of one form or another. Get the rat dog.
