Just purchased a weatherby 223 remington vanguard 2. It has a 1 in 12 twist and intend on using it for Coyotes for ranges up to 300-400 yards.

I bought some hornady 53 gr v-max and some 55 gr Berger varmint flat base bullets. I have nosler brass and CCI BR4 primers.

Before I go to the range I was wondering if anybody had some suggestions on loads that worked well in their weatherby or other equipment.

Thanks, Ron

I also own Vanguard (Howa) rifle in .223. Mine has a wood stock and I love it. Very accurate. I have found that a 52 or 53 gr bullet is as heavy as mine will shoot with great accuracy. I use 20.5gr.IMR4198 with a 52 or 53gr. bullet. Mostly, I shoot 45gr. Nosler and others.

I had the same rifle and agree with kerreckt. It would shoot 55's but I even got some in the 40's that did better, Just used the middle range of Hornady data as they were Hornady bullets.

I have a 1 in 12 twist and shoot 40 grain noslers with 22 grains of 4198.it shoots them into a 1/2" at 100,I can't get the 55 grainers to very well.

I also have a Howa 1500 in .223 which is the same action as the Vanguard. I don't think it's the 55gr bullet but the fast powder you're using with that 55gr bullet.

My most accurate groups and ammo are made with a 55gr Sierra GameKing bullet #1390 and Varget. A charge of 25.0gr or 26.0gr Varget has produced sub 1/2MOA loads @100 yards and 200 yards.

I have a custom Remington bolt gun I built years ago. Rifle has a 1:12 twist and the heaviest bullets I can really group with are 55 Grain. Best groups have been with 52 & 53 Grain bullets generally with AA2230. Also it seems to like 55 grain bullets using IMR4895. I can say that overall for the bullet weights mentioned my best accuracy came in around 3,000 FPS. Obviously your mileage will vary with your rifle but 3,000 FPS over the chronograph seemed to yield the best groups. Also, with the exception of getting fancy with Lapau Brass or Norma, most of my brass was Winchester or Remington and I used the same BR4 primers you mention.
