I just picked up a Webley VI that was shaved for 45 ACP ammo.

I understand now you can use 45 acp on moon clip and i aussume 45 auto rim.

But what about the orginal webley 455 ammo? Can you still use that?

No. The headspace is now all wrong for that, even if you can find any .455 ammo.

Use of .45 acp/auto rim is probably beyond what these guns were proofed for. Most get away with it, but if you reload, try to approximate original .455 pressures.

I was asking because i see Hornaday sells 455 ammo.

Around $15 a box at sportsman guide.

Yep, no .455. This conversion was so popular, it is hard to find a 455 Webley in original condition. Unfortunately, 45acp bullets are 0.452 in diameter, and most converted guns are not renowned for their accuracy.

I shoot 45 autorim in mine, so if you need some full moon clips, I can send you a couple I'm not using. Just PM me with you address, and I'll stick 2 or three in an envelope.

Question!

When you say the Webley was shaved, are you refering to the cylinder or the flash plate.

If its the cylinder that was aultered, why not ask the blokes up north if they've got any original .455 cylinders they'ed sell you...then change it out.

The back of the cyclinder was shaved so 45 moon clips would fit.

Thanks for the offer. I have a S&W 1917 so i have some moon clips and a box of auto rim.

I had thought about get a cyclinder in 455. I see that Numrich is sold out.

Anyone have a lead on where to get a orginal 455 cyclinder?

Brion

Could someone explain how the headspace is wrong for the 455?

Is it because the 455 is longer than the 45 acp and will stick out the front of the cyclinder know that the cyclinder is shaved?

A little more ingo would be appreicated.

The rim on a 455 is much thinnner than the 'rim' on a 45 acp in full moon clips or a 45 autorim, which is a 45acp case with a thick rim to allow it to be used without moon clips.

If you put 455 in a 'shaved' cyliners, they will have about a 0.060 or more gap between the case head and the recoil shield, so a the base of the case would be unsupported, leading to a possible blow case head.

More like a failure to fire. A spacer can be made but will cost more than the gun. I love to do custom work like this as I have a kid in college.

IC. thanks for the input.

Anyone still have a lead on where to get a 455 cyclinder?

Wouldn't someone with a lathe and drill press be able to turn out a spacing for a resonable price?

Webley Mk VI

I used to have a Webley Mk VI in pristine condition. The revolver performs much better shooting the ammo it was designed for. At the time the Canadian Dominion 455 Colt (Civilian version of the Webley cartridge) was available across the counter at the local shop. So I never undertsood the urge to shave them. Unfortunately I lost it in a burglury and never found another.
