Hutch man arrested after accidentally shooting son in leg

Reno County Sheriffís deputies seized 39 guns and arrested a rural Hutchinson man Saturday evening after they responded to an accidental shooting.
Robert Smith, 51, of 14608 Mayfield, was taken to the Reno County Jail on suspicion of possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia shortly before 7 p.m. Saturday.
According to police reports, Smith told police he accidentally shot his son in the leg. Police asked to see the gun used in the shooting, and Smith said it was next to his son.
When officers couldnít find the weapon, Smith asked his wife to retrieve it inside the home. The woman produced two handguns, neither of which was the weapon used in the shooting.
Police followed Smith into the house, and he produced the gun, a .357 Ruger. While in the home, officers allegedly detected the smell of burnt marijuana and told Smith they needed to collect all his weapons until they completed an investigation.
During a search of the home, police allegedly found a bong suspected of being used to smoke marijuana, an ashtray with residue and the 39 guns.
Smith is free on $1,000 bond.
