Went to academy looking for some .44 mag/spl ammo and came across this federal swift aframe 280 gr hollowpoint. Im familiar with their catalog of ammo bit this intrigued me. Whats its purpose? Its advertising 870 ft pounds of muzzle energy which seems pretty steep for defense .

I'm a Swift A-Frame fanbois, too! Favorite hunting load, 200gr. in my .300 WinMag.

Were I needing to defend myself from a bear/elk/moose, and I couldn't get to my rifle, 280 gr. of Swift A-Frame in .44Mag would be my choice.

The swift A frame is a very good heavy or dangerous game bullet, not meant to be a personal defense bullet but at the mild velocity federal loads to it seem to be counter productive. Step it up to 1400fps + and then it makes since. Maybe a lighter weight speer GD or maybe a XTP for thin skinned defense loaded to modern mild velocities.
