Earlier this morning around 4:00 AM I woke up to a strange noise.

I' was still dazed from waking up so I just sat there trying to figure out what it was. Eventually I figured it was somesort of big truck going down the road. The sound subsides. Just as I rolled back over to sleep I hear it again. This time I was pretty sure I knew what it was.

Someone was sitting in my driveway revving their engine over and over.

So I look out the window to see somesort of purple car I'd never seen in mylife and I couldn't see who was in the car due to the head lights.

I was quite POed by being woken to such stupid behavior, I retrieved and loaded my PC-9 carbine. Instead of walking out the front door which would have put me right in his headlights I walked out the side door of my house and approaced the car from the side.

To my surprise it appeared there was no one in the car. I spun around for a moment not knowing where this guy(s) was. It took me a moment to realize the driver had his seat laid back.

The driver was blackman in his late 40s or early 50s with gray dreadlocks. I wasn't sure if he was passed out or dead or what. I rapped his window for a few times before he finally woke up and rolled the window down.

I asked him who he was and what the hell he was doing in my driveway. He looked very drunk and mumbled "huh? who are?" when I asked him. I didn't ask again. Instead I told him he had 10 seconds to get out of my driveway or I was calling the police. "what? You're not the police" he replied. He didn't seem to notice I was armed.

At this point I was convinced that he was some drunk who couldn't find his house. I walked behind his car and memorized his plate and told him I was going to call the police and to wait right here.

I went back inside and called the police. As I was talking to them he apparently decided it was time to get out of Dodge.

Police come and they find him eventually. (about an hour ago) Turns out he was the son of school teacher who lives near and was visiting from California.

I few years before a drunk hispanic guy forgot which house he was living in and tried to force his way into my Grandmothers house (on the same street) and me and my step-brother came up behind him with my my SAR-1 and held him there until the a lone PD cop came and took him away.

Heh. What a night. And I have an interview job at 10:00 AM.

Sounds like a giggle. At least it ended peacefully.

I didn't find it funny at the time.:neener:

The incident with the hispanic guy was sort of funny. (happened in early 2005 when I was still in high school)

He was one of my friend's cousins. According to my friend he still talks about the night after a party when he was jumped by a crazy white kid with an AK-47 and complains that he was the one taken to jail instead of me.:)

Glad it turned out Ok but to be blunt rather than walking outside the smart thing would have been to just call the police. I know, it's your propery and all but by going outside of your home like that you could have well put yourself in a very bad situation.

if you had to shoot him after walking out there with a gun into a situation that was in no way a threat to your life, you'd probably be sharing a cell with bubba right now till you made bail.

Unless someone is activly breaking into your house and is just sitting in your driveway the legal smart thing to do is call the police and have him removed.

Yes, it is your property and you should be able to confront those on it. But the legal system sucks and is ass backwards. Might hewlp to post a no tresspassing sign. This way if it happens agian you can have them arrested for tresspassing. If you haven't asked them to leave or no sign is posted depending on your area getting a tresspassing charge to stick could be tricky.

My thinkin as well.

Unless you have kevlar....I just dont like reading that you walked up to the car and tapped on the window.

Leaving your house (I dont have stand your ground laws here) You left the defensive position. That being said, armed recon on your property is always a good thing IMHO. (if it has to be done)

Assess the situation, man in car (but their could be alot YOU dont know) then go back and call the police. stay in the home (if your family is still in the home.) wait for the cops.

I'm glad your safe.

Good advice guys.

As for tapping on the window, I was worried the guy needed medical help but I guess that wasn't worth the risk. Once I figured he was just drunk I got his plates and went back inside called the cops and stayed inside until they got there. I was just really mad at being woke up and wanted him gone.

In retrospect, though I had the jump on him, it wasn't worth the saftey or legal risk to confront him.

One other point, just for future consideration. It's not unknown to use a tactic like this to distract the potential victim while the rest of the team (one or more accomplices) wait in ambush.

Remember to be situationally aware, not just focused on the obvious issue.

two weeks after Katrina, My Girlfriend, myself, and her kids were awoken with the house shaking around 1:30am. We awoke from a dead sleep, evacuated the kids upstairs after I grabbed my pistol and charged down into the unknown on the first floor of our house. It felt like a home invasion, we thought it was BGs' crashing through the front door, but it was an "Evacuee" from New Orleans. >I know I will probably get flak from people, but I cornered the criminals outside the house and they were arrested and charged with possession of drug paraphenalia, criminal mischief and reckless endangerement. >It changes you thinking people are trying to enter your home and possibly hurt the ones you love. The police did not give me a hard time about my tactics either, at that point I did not want these guys to escape. > After all was said and done, it turned out they were high and drunk and hit the house with their car(no small feat if you know where we live). They took out our well for 8 days, and did a lot of damage to our property and cars... >I am grateful that no one was hurt in the end. The element is up here in Connecticut as well...
This was my post from Dec. 19th last year on a different thread...
