Weird. My niece shoots as well as me!

Well, the title IS a bit misleading....maybe a bit bait-ish.

So my niece is a very new shooter. Her technique is fairly poor, especially when shooting her Henry rifle. She's okay with it. She has a bit better technique with pistols. A bit of training is still needed.

So on Friday, I took her to the range. We brought two Henry rifles [22lr]. Her mother's Walther P-22. A Browning 1911-22, and my Taurus TX-22 with the competition slide and micro red dot sight.

All at 7 yards. Targets were 2 inch circles [9 of them on a sheet of paper].

She first shot the Walther. Did not do well with it at all initially. Makes sense. That gun is very hard to shoot well, especially for beginners.

Next she shot the Browning. Did a bit better, but still most of them off the targets and around 3-4 inches grouping.

For both of those, I'll have her work with them more to get better. Both can be shot well. I can get ~ an inch at 7 yards with them.

But then she shot my Taurus. Consistently, she was hitting the target right on, and only a few that didn't hit those 2" targets. I'm certain that the micro red dot makes it easier to get good groups. It also could be that the Taurus trigger is actually very good! She nearly shoots this pistol as I can. Of course, I can do a bit better with it because I've been shooting for some time. But she definitely impressed me with it though.

My oldest great grand daughter had been hanging with me and beating me now and then with 22 rimfie pistols for the last 3 years. She is now 14 years old. Of course she doesn't have essential tremors either. Even when my pills are completely stopping them she is right there with me. She is only 5'-2" and slender but she is no wimp. She shoots 9 mm and 38 special and will touch off a few rounds of 357 in my blackhawk now and then. She draws the line at 44 mag but shoots HV shells out of her 12 guage shot gun and I don't mean just 2 or 3 three rounds. It usually a couple of boxes. I won't even consider doing that anymore.

My experience with new shooters has been that women learn faster, shoot better and overall, do better than men.
I believe that this is so because women do not think that they already know how to shoot very well and they LISTEN and follow instructions. In my years as a range officer and instructor, many many times the male that brought the woman, departs the range sulking and displeased, the woman smiling and happy having done very well and easily out shot the "knowledgeable" male. Every one of my fellow range officers and instructors have had the same experiences.

From entirely subjective experience, it's my observation that the distaff will pay attention to instruction and detail far better than their male counterparts. They also generally begin with fewer preconceptions or notions to "unlearn."
So, they 'start' from a better position for success.
They also seem to respond to that success better, and retain well-learned lessons.

My daughter can outshoot me every once in a while. She's nice about it and reminds me that I need new glasses (or some other excuse). :)

Thanks for the replies.

I'll have to work a bit more with her on pure iron sight pistols, but I'm a quite pleased at how well she shot the Taurus. I gave some instruction and she seemed to respond well to it. Next range trip, I'll introduce her to my Thompson Center TCR22 rifle with a scope. She does fairly well with her Henry with the iron sights as well. More practice needed there, but she's learning quite well!
