So, I got my tax return yesterday and decided to buy something.

There are quite a few different guns I've been seriously considering lately. I've been wanting a Glock 26 or 27 pretty bad, same with the Kahr PM9, a Kahr K9 or K40 would be nice, I've been wanting another .41mag, I've been thinking about a single action revolver in .45LC, I've wanted a Hi-Power for quite some time, I've been thinking about a SIG (probably a 239, possibly a 229 or 245), I'd love a Ruger KP95 to compliment my KP345, I want another Taurus Milennium Pro (this time in 9mm), I was interested in a NAA Guardian, I want a...(you get the idea)

So, I went to a couple stores yesterday to take a serious look.

This is MD so guns aren't cheap. Most of the SIGs are in the $800s and the 239s are in the $700s. Still, I was considering a 239. One shop has Hi-Powers on sale for $599. I almost bought a Kahr P40 Covert that was a "factory test fire" model (whatever that means) for $550 (a great price around here). The main thing that stopped me on the Kahr is that it seems most of the problem Kahrs are the polymers in .40 (if it was a 9mm I would have put down my money then, but the 9mm P9 they had was $100 more and it wasn't a Covert or PM9 so I left to think on it). They also had a Glock 26 for $575 that I was considering (around here new Glocks tend to go for $570-620)- even though I don't really want to buy a new Glock I'm just not seeing many used G26s and G27s so I'm considering new. I also checked out an NAA in .32acp- I was far from impressed with the trigger pull.

So, I leave that store with a few guns (mainly the Glock and Kahr) on my mind and go to the range to shoot some of my guns. When I finish I check out their selection (it is an indoor range/gun shop). They have some nice looking guns and decent deals...

At both stores I'm disappointed in their Taurus PT92s. They are all the newest ones with the accessory rail built into the frame.

I look at, and almost buy, the Taurus Gaucho. It looks well made and the fit and finish is nice. It feels good in my hand and the trigger is nice. In this kind of gun I want .45LC. All the guns they have in the blue/case hardened finish (my first choice) are .357mag. They don't have any in the polished stainless (my second choice). The two they have in .45LC are both matte stainless so I pass.

Then I check out the SIGs. They have a new SIG 239, $700 something as expected. It is one of the 3 SIGs I am considering buying eventually (the 229 and 245 being the others). I pick it up and it feels great in my hand. The trigger isn't bad at all (pretty nice for a DA/SA actually). It is a little big for a single stack 9mm or .40 on a compact frame, but it isn't too bad. If they had one in .40 I probably would have snatched it up, but since it is a 9mm (I do like 9mm, but I want this gun in a .40) I am able to resist and keep looking.

Right next to that SIG 239 is a pistol I never really considered but decide to look at. Remember, the only SIGs that really interest me are the 239, 229 and 245. There is a CPO (Certified Pre-Owned) P226 sitting right next to the new 239 for $500 something (mid to upper $500s). I check it out on a whim (and due to the great price for a SIG around here- yes its used, but it is factory reconditioned and warrantied). It feels good in my hand, it is a full-sized pistol but feels and looks on the small size for a full-sized gun (almost what I'd consider an intermediate sized gun). Then the kicker...I dry fire it. This gun must have the nicest trigger I've ever felt on a SA/DA pistol. It was nicer in DA than the SA only FN Hi-Power at the other store. I immediately plopped down my debit card.

Unfortunately, with MD law there is a 10 day waiting period, it won't be up until a Saturday so I won't even be able to pick it up then, so it will be nearly 2 weeks before I can take possession. However, I have now bought my first SIG, and it is a SIG model that I didn't really think I'd buy. I can't wait to take it to the range for the first time (I'll have to check it out alongside my CZ 75B).

Enjoy your p226. They are a world class weapon. The only problem with Sigs is the more you have the more you will want.

I have a similar problem. I have yet to walk out of a gunshop with the gun that I had "planned" on buying. Last time I went in there looking to get a nice deep-concealment piece. I was going to look at a p32 and keep a vigilant eye out for a Jetfire (which I have always wanted). I wound up buying a 6" 686 instead, and I love the damn thing. I was a little dissapointed to find that I couldnt carry it in the pocket of my bluejeans though.

The Sigs do have really nice triggers, in my experience. I like the P226. Good call, and congrats on a nice purchase!

Way to go!

And good choice on the SIG 226. I picked up a CPO 228 last year from White Marsh Arms for a really good price. It's got a great DA trigger and an even nicer SA trigger (I figure it got good and broke in from its' previous owner).

Only thing was after about 3-400 rounds I started to get light primer strikes, so I swapped out the Hammer spring and it's been fine since.

Now go buy some ammo while you wait to get 'not disapproved'.

SIG 226, that is probably the only SIG I would buy. SIGs are great guns but most of them just don't fit me or feel right in my hand. I had a nice SIG 220 but I had to let it go because I just could get used to the poor DA trigger and general bad ergonomics.

The SIG 226 is a much better fit for me but unless it a great deal, I can't see buying one. I already have a Beretta 92fs and 92G Centurion which are two fo the best full sized 9mms on the planet. The SIG would just be another 9mm for me. Nothing wrong with that, I have several 9mms that don't really serve a purpose but I won't sell. My S&W 6906, 3913 and SA XD-9 don't fill any real role but I like them. My Kahr K-9 is smaller and fits me better than the 3913 and the Berettas are my choice for a full sized 9mm.

Congrats on the purchase, I have been looking into a Sig for quite some time.

Anyways, im pretty sure that the MD waiting period is 7 days, not 10. And just recently they started allowing Sunday to be included in the 7 day stretch. Not sure what shop you went to, but I bought two of my pistols in MD last year. On the 8th day, I went to get them without a hitch.

Just an FYI if your FFL/gunshop is making you wait longer than that. The waiting part bothers me more than the price. :p

Well it's pretty much downhill from there, get used to dissapointment in your future purchases. :neener: :D

Spectacular gun the P226. God I love SIGs. Enjoy it.

Chris

I'm gonna bet, given that you dry-fired other DA/SA Sigs, that the CPO 226 may have had a short trigger installed, and that's why you were so impressed with it. Generally I can't tell much of a difference in trigger pulls on the different DA/SA models until you put your hands on one with the short trigger.

Anyway...good purchase!! Once you get it home and start inspecting it and taking it to the range you'll understand why there's a difference in pricing on Sig's...you get what you pay for. Excellent engineering, fit and finish.

I've got the 239 in .40, and I love it.

Since I don't carry (NJ) I *almost* wish I bought the 226/229, if only for mag capacity, but the grip width on the single stack 239 is so much more comfortable for me...

I'm thinking about getting a Conversion barrel to 9mm, from EFK. I tried to get the barsto, but they won't tell anyone when they might get around to actually making one to ship....

There are quite a few different guns I've been seriously considering lately.

That's quite the diverse list! Do you have an SW 625? Check that one out next time you get a chance!

I have a Kahr P9 and I absolutely love it. Best trigger after my 1911. VERY accurate. Very pleasant to shoot! I'm sorry to hear they're having trouble with their 40's. Great company.

I want a Sig so bad . . . . but I just can't "pull the trigger" (pun intended :neener: ) on the purchase. Who do they make these guns for . . . Andre the Giant? Klingons? I don't have small hands . . but they're not extra large either. I'd say they were average. I can play octaves on the piano, no sweat (I can even stretch an extra key but that's it). But I just cannot, no matter how hard I try, get the Sig 229 (or any other similar sized Sig) to work for me. It's so friggin FAT . . . I can barely reach the trigger, it seems. If I grip it in a way that seems natural, I can barely get the pad of my fingertip on it. No matter what I do, I can't work the mag release without shifting the whole gun a little. And forget about the de-cocker. I've asked several people if there was perhaps a thinner aftermarket grip but no luck so far. There MUST be others who have this problem but don't mind the compromise! But even if I wanted to compromise there just isn't a natural grip to that gun. It's like grabbing a pole. Nothing feels natural. I'd buy a 239 but the capacity and lack of a rail eliminate that one. If I get a Sig it's going to have to be their Mosquito or their new 1911. I wish it could work for me. JUST TODAY I spent a 1/2 an hour with a 229 Equinox but it just wasn't going to happen. I can't get past the unnatural feel and the incredible girth.

I bought an HK USP Compact .40 a month ago but I'm already selling it (I bought the gray model and now I don't like the color). That's what I ended up buying instead of the Sig. I like it (except for the color) and I'll probably buy it again (in BLACK). It fits my hand great and has a reputation that's neck and neck with Sig. I haven't had much interest so I'm working out a trade-in with a local gun shop. I might trade it for an XD-45 but then I'm going to be right back looking for another high cap, compact .40 with a rail for winter carry.

If anyone has a Sig grip solution for me, PM me please!

Good luck with your decision!

:)
