So, I got my tax return yesterday and decided to buy something.
There are quite a few different guns I've been seriously considering lately. I've been wanting a Glock 26 or 27 pretty bad, same with the Kahr PM9, a Kahr K9 or K40 would be nice, I've been wanting another .41mag, I've been thinking about a single action revolver in .45LC, I've wanted a Hi-Power for quite some time, I've been thinking about a SIG (probably a 239, possibly a 229 or 245), I'd love a Ruger KP95 to compliment my KP345, I want another Taurus Milennium Pro (this time in 9mm), I was interested in a NAA Guardian, I want a...(you get the idea)
So, I went to a couple stores yesterday to take a serious look.
This is MD so guns aren't cheap. Most of the SIGs are in the $800s and the 239s are in the $700s. Still, I was considering a 239. One shop has Hi-Powers on sale for $599. I almost bought a Kahr P40 Covert that was a "factory test fire" model (whatever that means) for $550 (a great price around here). The main thing that stopped me on the Kahr is that it seems most of the problem Kahrs are the polymers in .40 (if it was a 9mm I would have put down my money then, but the 9mm P9 they had was $100 more and it wasn't a Covert or PM9 so I left to think on it). They also had a Glock 26 for $575 that I was considering (around here new Glocks tend to go for $570-620)- even though I don't really want to buy a new Glock I'm just not seeing many used G26s and G27s so I'm considering new. I also checked out an NAA in .32acp- I was far from impressed with the trigger pull.
So, I leave that store with a few guns (mainly the Glock and Kahr) on my mind and go to the range to shoot some of my guns. When I finish I check out their selection (it is an indoor range/gun shop). They have some nice looking guns and decent deals...
At both stores I'm disappointed in their Taurus PT92s. They are all the newest ones with the accessory rail built into the frame.
I look at, and almost buy, the Taurus Gaucho. It looks well made and the fit and finish is nice. It feels good in my hand and the trigger is nice. In this kind of gun I want .45LC. All the guns they have in the blue/case hardened finish (my first choice) are .357mag. They don't have any in the polished stainless (my second choice). The two they have in .45LC are both matte stainless so I pass.
Then I check out the SIGs. They have a new SIG 239, $700 something as expected. It is one of the 3 SIGs I am considering buying eventually (the 229 and 245 being the others). I pick it up and it feels great in my hand. The trigger isn't bad at all (pretty nice for a DA/SA actually). It is a little big for a single stack 9mm or .40 on a compact frame, but it isn't too bad. If they had one in .40 I probably would have snatched it up, but since it is a 9mm (I do like 9mm, but I want this gun in a .40) I am able to resist and keep looking.
Right next to that SIG 239 is a pistol I never really considered but decide to look at. Remember, the only SIGs that really interest me are the 239, 229 and 245. There is a CPO (Certified Pre-Owned) P226 sitting right next to the new 239 for $500 something (mid to upper $500s). I check it out on a whim (and due to the great price for a SIG around here- yes its used, but it is factory reconditioned and warrantied). It feels good in my hand, it is a full-sized pistol but feels and looks on the small size for a full-sized gun (almost what I'd consider an intermediate sized gun). Then the kicker...I dry fire it. This gun must have the nicest trigger I've ever felt on a SA/DA pistol. It was nicer in DA than the SA only FN Hi-Power at the other store. I immediately plopped down my debit card.
Unfortunately, with MD law there is a 10 day waiting period, it won't be up until a Saturday so I won't even be able to pick it up then, so it will be nearly 2 weeks before I can take possession. However, I have now bought my first SIG, and it is a SIG model that I didn't really think I'd buy. I can't wait to take it to the range for the first time (I'll have to check it out alongside my CZ 75B).
