I've narrowed it down to several choices.

Sig 226
Sig 229
Sig 239
XD40

I currently own a 226 in the 9mm variety. The 226 and 229 are both double stacked mag with a 239 being single stacked. At one time I owned an XD 40 which I somewhat miss.

I love Sigs but I am not sure I want to spend 600 plus dollars on a "beater" therefore the XD looks appealing. It also has a lightrail so I can hook up a XD toaster oven and tactical light. :)

So for an all around range, night stand, SHTF, kick it in the dirt, drop it in water and run it over with a stream roller 10mm kurtz what would you choose. With the above guns reliablity and accuracy is something I wont have to worry about.

For a beater, I'd go w/ the XD on your list

Go with the XD, its a great pistol. I dont know if I would refer to it as a beater?????? A beater is a POS gun and the XD is certainly not that.

45R, have you considered a CZ-75B in .40S&W? IMHO, the best value in firearms is CZ.:D

I go with the Sig 239 and it's not a beater. When you get the 239 in 40S&W, you can also get the 357Sig barrel for it later or as a combo. Some say the 357Sig has more potential than the older 40. I have one in both calibers, plus a Kahr K40 which is my usual ccw carry. Get the one that feels and shoots the best for you.

Let me clarify:

When I said "beater". I meant that it was going to be the designated gun that I dont mind getting a weeee bit of "wear" on. :) I didnt mean that the gun was a POS or anything like that.

Havent thought about the Sig Pro or even a Glock.

Thought about spending around 400-450ish on a 10mm Kurtz.

Have you thought about the Steyr M40?

For $400-$450ish you could buy the gun, some spare mags and some ammo and maybe even a nice holster.

SW99 will cost you $100 less and is nearly same gun. in fact frame was made by walther.

though I would look into steyr m40 or a trade in hk usp40 from cdnninvestments. cdnninvestments has the hk usp 40 going for $400 its a trade in though meaning used.

Yah, but the SW99 sucks compared to the Walther P99 - quality is WAY worse and fails within a few years. I'm told all this - I don't own either guns, so I could be wrong.

Somewhat agree w/ Ky Larry re: CZ.
However, how about the CZ40B as the best VALUE in .40sw.
(NOT trying to belittle the CLASSIC 75) :D

The 40B was a collaboration between CZ & Colt.
Has the guts of CZ w/ a double stack 1911 style grip, allow frame, and DA/SA system w/ the option of cocked & locked or DA 1st shot.
Kinda feel like it's a gun w/out a country. Not a classic CZ, nor classic 1911; maybe that was part of it's not becoming more popular.

Mine fits me very well and has been accurate & reliable.
Changes include a heavier recoil spring and Big Dot sights to make it a perfect mid-size SD gun. IMHO.
They can be had from $300.00 - $350.00.
CDNN apparently has some now.

just bought a police trade in HK USP .40 off of CDNN investments (www.cdnninvestments.com download the catalouge) Only cost me $400 after transfer and other costs (aside from the 3 high caps i bought)

one word best describes this gun, immaculate. You can't tell it's a police trade.

Steyr M40 or S40

I just bought an S40 from CDNN for $340 ($400 even with extra mag, tax and shipping). The M40 is listed in their catalog at $290. These prices are for NIB guns.

My new gun is built like a tank, even tho it's polymer framed (or clad). The finish will definitely take a beating and keep its looks. Dead-on accurate, with consistent shot placement. Very good trigger, IMO (but I'm used to Makarov DA :) ).

I will probably get another at some point.

you know you really need to talk to me before you go shopping for guns...
it just so happens that i have a full sized glock 22 (same size as the 17, just in .40) sitting unloved in my garage...we can hook up and see if you like it

of your posted choices, i prefer the 226 to the 229 because it just balances better in my hand...and i like the longer barrel. the 239 will handle much like you 225. i see the XD is a "product improved" glock.

my personal favorite in .40 is my beretta 96, followed by the CZ and it's italian clones

Of your list I'd say the XD although I've no experiance with them. CZ 40 is a good suggestion as is the CZ 75 and I love the Steyr's sights and if their quality even approches their rifles they're easily the most under-marketted pistol out there. I'd have to say Steyr is one of the most under-published manufacturers in the US.

My father's Pro-Hunter in .270 is one of the most accurate and easily the most durable rifle in his collection and he has several pre-64 Winchesters and some fine Remington 700s. I think their pistols are at least worth a consideration.

The Steyr is out....Not legal in Kali

I had a P99 at one time but its too pretty to beat up.

9mmepiphany-
We are shooting at the GunRoom the day after Thanksgiving :) Come out and play. I was really considering a B96 until I shot Dr. Jones. The darn slide stop seared off the base........ :barf: It was probably one of the slickest Berettas that I had shot. Not sure if I am tooo crazy about Glocks. The only one I get along with is the G30.

The 239 sounds like it would be a hoot to shoot in .40 :) which will leave me with the option of a .357Sig and 9mm barrel :)

Not sure what's on the California...

...infringement list...The right of the people to keep and bear arms as determined by a state published list based on a "drop test"...pllllllleeeeeeeeeassssssssseeeeeeeeee.

Anywho...

CZ40B has some strong proponents over at the CZ-FORUM, CDNN was selling for $249.

CZ75B in .40 is a good choice with some Witness models even cheaper (rivaling the CZ40B).

Another vote to consider the SigPro in 40, this one is pretty reasonable and I've been tickled with my SP2009.

...Add describes add on barrel for $129 if you're interested in shooting .357 Sig out of it...no magazine change required IIRC.

Hard to go wrong with the steel sig's, but I'm not sure I could bring myself to use a steel Sig' as a "beater".

The XD-40 is a nice choice for the criteria you described and was recently tortured tested (forget the rag)...and came out favorably against similar Glock tests. Hasn't stood the test of time, and some bemoan the evolution from HS2000 (sub $300 guns) to Springfield, $100 trade-off for Lifetime Warranty.

My buddy actually has the ported XD-40...loud noise but very mild recoil...pretty accurate and has been 100% reliable for him...some muzzle flip but can be overcome with practice.

Good luck!

45R, have you considered a CZ-75B in .40S&W? IMHO, the best value in firearms is CZ.

I have a CZ 75B in .40 S&W, and I bought it because I didn't want to spend @$700.00 + for another Sig, but this time in .40S&W (I currently have a P228 9mm).

Although I like the CZ, and think that is is a great value for the money, I am of the opinion that Sig makes a better product, and I would definitely opt for a Sig P226 in .40 S&W, at a good price.
