I am looking for a place in Western Washington where I can go and load up more than 1 round in my rifle magazine. I know that the issaquah range allows 10, but why only 10? It seems like all of the ranges are run by liberals or they want me to become a member which would set me back over $100 which I would rather spend on other things. Besides, its the principle of the matter.
If I continue to go to these ranges, I will ingrain bad habits, plus it is totally boring, and it is hard to heat up my barrel enough to check for hot barrel accuracy.

Can I shoot in the national forests? BLM? anywhere else?

Western Washington is a pickle of a place for avid shooters. There are many unconstitutional liberal restrictions that limit good shooting practices. They just don't understand what gun types are. It's okay to have a 5 million bore single shot but a standard .223 AR-15 is somehow more dangerous. Anyways, yeah most BLM land is okay to shoot on. Call the forest service headqarters for your area to double check. They can give you a map and good pointers for that area. You definitely don't want to accidentally get in trouble.

I have to ask about your statement. What exactly is "Hot barrel accuracy?" Doesn't a hot barrel decrease accuracy, thus cancelling out the accuracy part? If you're going for volume shooting, your barrel will heat up. If you are precision shooting, you want a cool barrel. Keep this in mind, the more rounds you fire out of a hot barrel, the more rapidly you will wear the bore out. Cold barrel=Good.

I just want to see how my cheap WASR-10 shoots after the barrel heats up. Plus you nver know how your magazines really function until you load them all the way up and shoot with them.

Yeah, I agree with the funciton test part of the thing. Do the ranges around you only allow single shot? Are you in the Seattle area? That sounds completely ridiculous to me.

Unfortunately for us the Seattle liberals have managed to outlaw shooting in King (now named for MLK jr)county.
It is technically illegal to shoot in self defense. However that has not been enforced yet. Give them time.
I joined the cascade rifle and pistol club but you are correct it is $100.
Some people shoot out on I90 around exit 43. Do it at your own risk.

I shoot at Tacoma Sportsmans club in Puyallup you load up to 10 rounds there but most of us just load a full mag and as long as your being responsible nobody will say anything to you. But you still have to put a second between each shot but the member ship is only 70 a year.

Theres also Champion Arms in Kent you can shoot your rifle there as long as you have frangible ammo for it and Steve doesnt care how big the magazine is or how much you have loaded in it. You can shoot as fast as you want Champion Arms as long as your a member wich is 250 a year.

Good Luck.

It is technically illegal to shoot in self defense.

Perhaps you could support this little gem? With state preemption, no county can do such a thing, and RCW 9.41 pretty clearly comes down on the side of self-defense.

King Co. has many shortcomings, but let's at least get the facts right.

If you're ok with some travel time, there are plenty of shooting areas to be found in the woods east of Greenwater on Hwy 410. I routinely go up and shoot there. My friends have twice been stopped and checked out by Fish and Wildlife (and told they weren't doing anything wrong, just checking), but that has not happened to me.

Snohomish County is much friendlier.

Island county is too, but they have one lady rep who keeps pushing for very strict gun laws.

You are correct. However if you look here http://www.metrokc.gov/mkcc/Code/15-Title%2012.pdf
on page 12-144

12.68.020 Violations - Misdemeanor - Penalty - Arrest.
A. Any person carrying a firearm in a "No Shooting Area," under circumstances which manifest
intent to discharge or which indicates that such firearm has been discharged in a "No Shooting Area," is
guilty of a misdemeanor
. Among those circumstances which may be considered in determining such intent
are the following:
1. Type of firearm;
2. Manner in which firearm is being carried;
3. Whether or not the firearm is capable of discharge;
4 Information concerning the discharge of a firearm within the prior two hours.
B. The first offense for violation of this chapter constitutes a civil penalty not to exceed one hundred
dollars. Consecutive offenses are punishable, upon conviction, by a fine not exceeding two hundred fifty
dollars or by confinement in the county jail for a period of not more than ninety days.
C. Any police officer having information to support a reasonable belief that a person has committed
a violation of this chapter, involving physical harm or threats of harm to any person or property and by a
firearm, has the authority to arrest the person.

I know it is a long stretch but if some county attorney really wants to make your life miserable they could use that.

I was once in complete agreement with you until it was explained that way.
I also said technically illegal.

Thanks, guys. The Tacoma place seems like one I definatly want to check out. The legal stuff regarding self defense is interesting also, but I will leave that up to God. It's beyond my time, patience and intelligence to figure out since, as always, it is better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

Well, if you get out to the West Sound area, there are plenty of decent gun clubs ... Tacoma, Gig Harbor, Kitsap and Poulsbo "Gun Clubs" or "Sportmens' Associations." Reasonable membership fees, although you will probably find some rather restrictive firing policies if you're a member of the EBR club who likes to dumpafullmag'o'30roundsallatonce ...

Which is why I do most most of my rifle shooting at Range 15 at Ft. Lewis (find yourself a shooting buddy who's active duty or retired military).

acdodd, seems as though that King Co. ordinance was tested a few months back when a Seattle gentleman shot and killed an assaultive street person, at midday, in Pioneer Square or thereabouts ... there were no problems even with the responding SPD officers (not always known as the most perceptive cops out there) quickly sizing up the event as self-defense. Even in liberal sheepland, the news coverage was mostly favorable and there was little to no uproar about a citizen, lawfully carrying, exercising his right to self-defense with a firearm...

Hurrah for revisionist MLK Jr. County.

I go to the Tacoma Sportsman Club on a pay-per-visit budget since I've been going to ranges less and less due to time constraints. I've gone out by Greenwater several times with friends and another that owns property around the Port Angeles area. It's a shame this half of the state has been taken over by weenies.

WA state also relies heavily upon case law and intent, and that law strictly pertains to recreational shooting in "no shooting areas" as well as negligent discharges potentially (though I've never heard of this either). I guess NOTHING is impossible, but once again the right to self-defense with a firearm is made VERY clear in the RCW.

You stated that it's technically illegal to shoot in self-defense, which is technically FALSE. Just because a county attorney might try and make your life miserable, the state law will trump his/her efforts and legality would be quickly established. A false arrest does not mean your action was illegal. It simply means you were arrested because of ignorance or willful perversion of the law.

There's a shooting pit near McCleary west of Olympia. Shoot whatever you want.

If you really want shooting freedom, head up North to Skagit & Whatcom county. Out around the hwy 9 area, there are some great gravel pits. You just need a 4wd to get to them

Funny, I found this thread when I Googled this same question this morning. I'd love to find somewhere within an hour or two of Seattle where I could shoot informally for free.

I'm a member of the Snoqualmie Valley Rifle Club, which doesn't impose any rules I can't live with, but sometimes it's nice to get out in the woods to shoot.

I've also shot at Wade's Eastside Gunshop and Range and the Issaquah Sportsman's Club (where my uncle was the Range Master in the '70s) many times. No rapid fire at Issaquah, though, and the maximum range is only 100 yards.

There were a couple spots way up the North Fork of the Snoqualmie (in Forest Service land - NOT on Hancock Trust land) where my buddies and I would sometimes shoot, but last time I checked the bridge over Sunday Creek was closed. FWIW, we always cleaned up our mess and then some.

When I lived in Olympia, the Thurston County Sherrif's Department tole me I could shoot anywhere in Capital Forest with a safe backstop, but that was in the '90s.

Any suggestions within two hours (preferably less) from Seattle. I have a 4x4, if that's what it takes.

Curious about the

If you're ok with some travel time, there are plenty of shooting areas to be found in the woods east of Greenwater on Hwy 410.

SAG0282, is the area you're talking about on another FSR? Just curious...? I used to go shooting up there all the time, but with all the no shooting signs all over F.S.R. 71, I haven't been out there much. Never taken the time to look to find a shooting area beyond, as it was always convient. Just figured they were trying to stop all shooting in the area. If you have additional information.

I typically shoot at

Wades Eastside Range (great range)
Champion Arms (they are real nice, but need to fix the target carriers.)
Private Range in Port Angles (way out....)
North Bend (a long time ago)

Over on the Peninsula it's a little easier to find places to shoot. Plus, my brother in law is a gun nut too..... :D

Anyway if anyone has any good sites, I'd be interested. I've been looking to check out the Cascade Gun Club in Ravensdale, since it has lots of ranges.

Looks good Mainsail. Thanks! Google Maps says it's 1 1/2 hour from my house. I may check it out.

How big is it? On Terraserver, it looks like the clearing is less than 150 yards wide. It also looks like it is within 500 hards of a house or other building (West of the pit)

The McCLeary spot is a good one , fortunately for me I live about 16 miles down Hwy 106 from there but I live in the middle of a tree farm . SO depending on what section has been harvested I can have a pretty good 1000 yrd range close and handy . BTW I usually carry my WSAR-10 + 75 rnd magaznone when tromping through the woods here :neener:

Ok, here goes.

I like shooting in the woods simply becuse the basic 4 rules are almost all that apply and I can shoot whatever. (Pack it out and a few others too I guess)

East of Granite Falls:
Alotta folks go shooting east of Granite Falls in a place that used to be an gravel pit. That's where I usually head when I wanna shoot stuff that I can't at an indoor range. (propane tanks, toilets, windows, etc. I'd say it's about a 45 min drive each way from Hwy 9, but I drive alittle fast.

From Hwy 9 take Hwy 92 east to granite falls. Turn left in town by the school, I think it's the second stop sign. That will be mountain loop Hwy. follow that past the entrance to the national forest (near the ranger station on the side of the road).

After you cross a bridge, (i think it's blue) you will find 351st Dr. NE immediately on your left. Instead, turn right up the hill which will become a gravel road quickly. You'll know this is the correct road because as soon as you cross the bridge and turn right you'll see the old road that skirted the east bank of the river has been washed out as the riverbank fell into the river. If you took this road to the top, you'd be a short distance from the inactive ski lodge that used to be up there. some people take there quads, dirtbikes, and offroad machines up there.

Part way up the hill you'll pass a parking lot, and permanent sani-can on your right, and a gate in front of you that's usually open, unless the road ahead is unpassable. Usually this is the part where skiers and hikers leave the road.

Continue up the road in a southwesterly direction. About 4.5 miles from where you turned off the mountain loop hwy the road will switchback to your left, the southeast (not the first switchback though.) Follow the jeep sized trail (though I've done it on my motorcycle and in a fullsize bed king cab 3/4 ton truck as well,) that heads south then turns west, then south again. That total trail length is about 100 yards.

As you round the last corner, you'll enter a big rock bowl on one side with cliffs not far into the woods on the other side. As you'll see from the ground, (if the snow is gone,) hundreds of thousands of rounds have been discharged here and there is plenty of man-made debris that usually gets left up there to shoot as well.

Have fun! Most of the hikers are several miles below you and the offroad types are still a few miles up the road at the summit, so there's not really anything to worry about accidentally shooting

NorthWest of Oso:

Take Lake Cavanaugh road north. Along the sides of the road before you reach the lake are several places that have obviously been used as shooting ranges in the past. The spots are usually too small for anything but handguns, but one can often find rare calibers of brass laying around if they like that kinda thing. I have no pictures of these spots though.

Also north of Oso, take Brooks Creek road north to almost the dead end. The road will Y going up a hill past a gate on your left, or downhill to the dead-end on your right. Go up the hill. On a plateau there will be two houses and the road travels between them. You'll pass another gate which is occasionally locked so vehicles can't pass.

This is the edge of DNR land. It's free to use year-round for camping, dirt-biking, shooting, etc. I'm not sure what the gate schedule is that the ranger keeps but the gentleman at the western house on the plateau told me that he also has a key in case I ever get locked in, come ask him, and he'll let me out. There are other exits to this land, but I've never gone more than 2-4 miles into it, so I never used any other entrances or exits.Head up the road until you can find a place where you won't be shooting down the road, and have fun.

South West of Olympia:

We usually head into the Black Hills, and shoot in areas at the top of the hills that have been cleared. Makes for great gun shot echoes for several seconds.
IMG_0506.jpg
All the off-road trails are near the bottom when you first enter, so drive up the gravel road until it ends at the top of one of the hills.
DCP_1618.jpg
There are several splits near the end of the road, but they all dead-end on cleared hills, so which one you take doesn't matter much.

I hear the WHT guys on ARFCOM might know of some good spots. Haven't been out to shoot with them, yet, though. I am shocked that Cali had better ranges, (Albeit rapidly diminishing.) Sam's is fine for indoor stuff, but I am looking forward to doing some more practical and longe range stuff with the rifles. Kenmore is a nice looking range, but the 1 per rule is so incredibly Fudd. Having to remove and reload your mag every single time you fire is no way to test for groups.

There are many unconstitutional liberal restrictions
How can they be liberal if they are restrictions? That is oxymoronic.

Hey Busy squirrel, Thanks for the pics, It made me feel like I was back home again. I know right where your talking about. If you head farther North towards Alger Mountain, You will find a pit twice the size with 3 tiers of cliffs for target backdrops. I think I will gather up some gear and head back that way for a shoot with the old friends when the weather clears up.
