Westside Schools on limited lockdown as precautionary measure; no threat to school or students

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) – Westside Schools will remain on a limited lockdown for the remainder of Thursday after police advised the school to go on lockdown after a man was spotted in the area carrying a rifle.

The Craighead County Sheriff's Department alerted the school to lockdown the buildings as a precautionary measure after a man was spotted on a nearby road carrying a rifle.

According to Craighead County Sheriff Jack McCann, the man was located around County Road 102 and State Highway 349, and was never closer than a couple of miles to the school.

Sheriff McCann said that Arkansas State Police and Craighead County Sheriff's Deputies were alerted to the area, but never found anyone.

Police and school officials say he never made it to school grounds, and again was never closer than a couple of miles to the school.

The school will remain on limited lockdown, which means they will have limited outside activities, but will be as normal inside the schools.

Police and school officials tell Region 8 News the campus was never in imminent danger.

...but we're going to over-react anyway.

...and was probably actually holding a shotgun, and shooting at beavers or muskrats in his drainage ditches.

I'm from that area, and there's nothing out there at Co.102 and Hwy349 besides farm fields and, wait for it, some creeks and woods that people probably hunt and fish in more than anything else.

Sheesh.

Another lockdown.

:(
Its sad. Maybe I'm just over the hill but I remember after school if we wern't
working the guys would take their shotgun or rifle & just walk down the road to a field & just plink or get a couple of squirrels. It was fun & swat wasn't
trying to take you down. Nowaday you have to becareful what you say or how loud before somebody is on the phone yelling wolf!!

I remember lockdown drills in high school. Basically we practiced how to cower in the corner in fear and wait for death.

They were kind of fun though, great time to pull various pranks. I remember one kid hopped on the radiator for some reason, slipped, went to grab the blinds to catch himself, and ended up tearing down the blinds and toppling a small bookshelf on his way down LOL good times

Let's see, a man was (probably lawfully) carrying a gun more than 2 miles from the school, so they locked the school down? Since when did it become a crime to carry a rifle in public?

Mike the Wolf:...Since when did it become a crime to carry a rifle in public?

Born yesterday?

Do a search and you'll find plenty of places where carrying a firearm in plain view will get you cuffed.

They do lock downs for all sorts of things-not just firearms. We had a lock down because a teacher lost it and was driving around like a lunatic at high speeds-evading the police. We have had lockdowns when parents have made threats too.

Given the history in this particular school district, I understand why they were so quick to call a lockdown. Give them a break.

I can understand... However, freedom is an inherently dangerous condition. When government entities demand the freedom in a useless call for safety then freedom is in danger. Considering the history, the authorities need counseling, not authority.

Better to be safe than sorry, especially since they had a history of issues in the school. Nonetheless, I wonder how often police get called just because someone happened to see a gun.

Hollering about freedom is always the fallback position, isn't it? Why don't we just cut out all the hooraw and plainly state that nothing the government or LE does is EVER right? LE gets crapped all over for not reacting (see all the endless bitching about how they handled/didn't handle Columbine), but they also get crapped all over when they do react (see this very thread).
I am a teacher and I have been heavily involved in my district's safety procedures. Did any of you actually read the article? Business as usual continued inside the building. They weren't cowering in corners waiting to die. They just didn't let the kids outside. The same, I daresay, as they likely do on days when it is raining. Next time it rains there, and the kids don't get to go out for recess, please be sure to post a screed about the Death of Liberty. In fact, you are some kind of pinkocommielibtard git if you don't crosspost it to multiple forums.
