What 1911 best exemplifies 100 years of service?

Lots of suggestions here. I've shot the 1911 for a long time and always look for good sights and a beavertail is always on the list. I had a Wilson KZ 45 and it was a nice gun, but shooting fast, the polymer frame didn't make it for me. Steel definitely anchors the pistol's shooting qualities.

To celebrate its 100th year, I'd look at what the 1911 has evolved into. Its obvious, the original design was not perfect (oh the blasphemy!) so most serious uses of the 1911 incorporate high visibility sights, the beavertail grip safety and a good trigger.

Look for those features which are reasonably available on American manufacturers' 1911's. From there, you can choose the degree of accuracy, finish, upgrades and bling from there, knowing it will cost more. Buy a good sample and you'll be happy with it. Springfield Armory, Smith and Wesson, Kimber all sell these standard modern renditions of the 1911. You're looking at under $1k for a good model..usually around $800 if not paying retail prices. Colt, well, they tend to be pricier, but some prefer the horsey. Good guns, though.

FWIW, the flat or arched mainspring housing is a preference you'll determine, so look for a good sample on the other features you determine to be your celebration pistol. You can always change the mainspring housing and match the finish for relatively little cost.

I suspect if you wait a bit, there will be more original 1911 reproductions out by various companies.

And I expect that 9 of 10 will be covered in garish commemorative foo-foo and cost a mint. Manufacturer's... please... please PLEASE don't do a commorative model with a huge swooping beavertail & forward serrations. That would be SO wrong on SO many levels...

I'll be looking for something tasty. A simple "1911-2011 Commemorative" will do. Maybe some light engraving or something. Preferably by Colt, but I'm pretty sure that will be out of my league $$$-wise.
