What 308 do you guys recommend?

Yes, I'm trying to keep my purchase south of $800. I checked my local shop today and the guy told me I can get a CZ550 varmint with the hs-precision stock for about 850. I kind of like the idea of the single set trigger. I could also get a Savage with the 24inch heavy barrel, accutrigger, and accustock for around 650. I'm still interested in the FNs. The had an SPR for around $800. I couldn't remember the model of the one mentioned above so he didn't get me a price on that one. I'll call him back and ask him about that.

Best bet, Savage. Tikka will do well also, the Remingtons of today, well, they are not the Remingtons of yesterday, if you can read into that, I did not want to start a 'my Remington is better than your Savage' debate! lol

Depending on the cash you want to part with, the Savage model 10/110 in various configurations, or the various Law Enforcement models Savage offers are superb, they have been excellent performers for us.

I"ve read quite a bit about the newer Remingtons and I would prefer a Savage over Remington. I'm actually kind of intrigued by the FN PBR XR too. I still have to sell my P7 so I have a little time to decide. One thing I like about the FN is it comes with the overmolded hogue stock with the aluminum bedding block and the 20 moa rail. All I would need to do is slap on my scope and bipod and off I go. It has the heavy fluted barel so it might not be as heavy as the Savage. I don't know, this is always so danged hard.

Does anyone know what the rifling twist of the FN PBR XP?

Given a choice between the Savage FLCP-K and the FN PBR XP, which would you choose?

My M700 Tactical averages 0.5 MOA with surplus ammo. The best groups were in the 0.25 MOA, and the worst groups were in the 0.75 MOA (with 12 MPH gusting winds). That is with ball ammo. Hard to imagine better than that, bone stock as sent from the factory. That is as-good-as my M700 Police at 2/3s the cost, and as-good-as my Kimber M84 LPT at 1/3 the cost.

I've had Savage's, a FN PBR, and now a Rem700. they should all meet the OP's use.

here's my Rem700 SPS Tactical that i just put together this weekend.

I have owned a Ruger Mk 11 for about 15 years, in the light barrel configuration. It is strictly a deer hunting rifle. I put a 60.00 Timney trigger on it and glass bedded it, and it is as good as you can get for the money imo. The gun is only as good as the glass, so make sure you plan that equally. I have a Leupold 1.5x5 vx 111 on it.
I must say though, the current production Winchester 70 featherweight is a fantastic gun quality wise for the money, and if I had the $$ I would be shopping.

My fifteen year old and I went out to the range a couple of weeks ago.
This was his first time shooting the brand new Savage .308.
Thats a 5 shot group of 168gr Sierra Matchkings in front of RL-15.

For the money, Savage is hard to beat.
Oh,
and its the only bolt action rifle I've ever owned, so I don't know any better.

Damn quack, that sure is purty. Nice group Billch. I have a Savage 110 in 7mm Rem Mag that is accurate as heck too. I know a 308 Savage will shoot well too. Does anyone knwo what the difference is between the Savage FLCP and the FCP? What does the L stand for?

Thanks!!! i still have to take it to the range. expecting it to shoot as well as my Savage did.

the "L" is for Left

here is a question. I'll probably end up getting a Savage. They shoot like crazy even if the action isn't as smooth or pretty as the others. Do you think I'm better off getting a model with the accustock (FCP-K)or the HS precision stock (FCP-HS Precision)? Or should I just get a heavy barrel model like the FP and buy a stock like our friend above with the B&C stock? It seems its not a bad deal to get the HS Precision model as buying the rifle and HS stock seperately would likely cost more but it probably be even cheaper to get the FP and a B&C stock. I'm still on the fence about which one.

if you like the HS stock, get the HS. i usually swap the stocks out, so i get the basic one.

FWIW, the B&C stock is ~$200

if you go on www.snipercentral.com, the have package Rem700's for $1150, which is about what i spent on my setup as well.

Jon, don't forget the used racks at your local gun shops. Lots of good pre-owned rifles out there looking for a good home.

I would take a serious look at a Savage model 10 FXP or a Remington 700 (loo for one without the X-mark trigger as I have HEARD that they are awful to adjust). I was in Walmart and saw they had the Savage 10FXP for $384 with the accutrigger- I can attest that this will be as accurate as you can get for a standard gun out of the box.

As for the stock, you can find new take-off stocks for sale at many of the precision gun sites. Sniper Central and Sniper's Hide have many listed for sale.
I personally went with the Remington 700P. It is a heavy 26 inch barreled gun. It comes already in the HS precision stock. The Remington 700 SPS Varmint is the same exact gun minus the HS stock. They can be found for around $500 or so. The stock, bought from someone who tooks theirs off to upgrade, can be found for around $150-200. Well within the OP's budget..

Jon,
I used to own a FN PBR and it was a great gun, but it is at the top of your price range... plus add glass, bipod/sling and ammo.... your up to 1K. I liked it, very accurate but heavy.

A friend just got a SAVAGE M10 Precision Carbine and apparently he is in love. It seems to fit exactly what I was looking for, all the Savage goodies... plus a lower weight. It would make a good Tac rifle or hunter. You can aguire one for about $650. Try Buds.

You might want to look at a CZ. I have the 550FS and it has proven itself to be a worthy addition. They also make the 550 in a heavy, or light barrel. The .308 is a great round and the CZ is a well made and reasonably priced weapon. The two would be like peanut butter and jelly. They're just made to go together.

I checked my shop today and a 10 FCP with the HS Precision Stock is $881.00. I already have glass and a bipod so the only thing I would have to buy is the sight rail and dies to start reloading. A 10 FP would be 596.00 and the 10 FCP-K is 714.00. It seems to me the FCP-K would be the best deal if I stayed with the Accustock but I would probably be happier with the HS stock so that is probably the one I'm leaning towards.
