I've decided that it is time for me to get a nice .308. Last week I bought a Sig P220 and it has officially relegated my P7 PSP to the safe. I have no need for it to sit there and get lonely so I've decided I want to get a .308 rifle to replace it. I have the PSP, 5 mags, and a holster to sell so that should give me enough money (or close enough anyhow) to get a decent .308 for plinking and target shooting out to about 500 or 600 yards. I handled a Savage Precision Carbine at the gun show a few weeks back but it only has a 20 inch barrel. I was thinking of getting the Savage FLCP-K. it has a 24 inch barrel, accutrigger, and the Accu stock. I'm not interested in spending whole lot more than what I will get from the P7 . I already have a decent scope so I only need suggestion on a rifle. What do you guys suggest?

BTW, please no gun snobs telling me I need to spend a fortune on your favorite rifle. I'm on a budget here.

I should add, I'm looking for a bolt action. A detachable mag is as tactical as I would get. I would LOVE and FAL, but I don't think it is what I need right now.

Noting wrong with that Savage you were eyeballing. A 20" heavy barrel is gonna be plenty accurate, and muzzle velocity will still be good. Love my 20" Savage 10FP:)

That FN PBR XP looks like a definite option. It even comes with the 20 moa sight rail. Nice.

What do you guys think of the CZ 550 Varmint? Does it stack up well with the Savage and the FN?

I would get one of the newer Winchester Featherweights, made by FN in Greenville, S.C.

I'd really love to see one too. They'd be pretty rare, as FN manufactures their firearms in Columbia, SC.

Nice. What about the Remingtons? No one has mentioned the 700s. Are they not up to the task anymore?

Just stay away from the cheapest of the cheap (like Remington's junk of the year which I think is their 770) and you'll be fine. My personal suggestion would be a Ruger M77 Hawkeye, but there is nothing at all wrong with products from Remington (model 700), Savage, FN (including Winchester brand), Sako, Weatherby, S&W, T/C, etc. etc.

for a boltie, that savage with accustock sounds pretty tough to beat. I would also look at a marlin, or thompson center, and if semi auto is your route, don't over look a saiga. I have seen some of these, with the longer 22 inch bbls, and wood furniture; one is a thumbhole stock, and the other is a hogsback stock.
Both are allready converted, so you get a decent trigger, and some american made parts allready.

The cz, will in all likelyhood, out shoot them all, plus have a nice , single set trigger...

for 500-600 yards, a 20 inch barrel is plenty. there are the Savage heavy barreled rifles that get excellent reviews, and the Remington 700 SPS Tactical or Varmint. i'm having great results with my SPS Varmint in .308.

I'm quite fond of my CZ550 Varmint. I chose the walnut stock over the plastic or composite one both because I think it feels better to me and because HS Precision makes the composite stock, and I do not wish to support them.

It also accommodates the detachable 10 round magazine, FWIW.

If you're referring to stubbicatt I think that's a Versa-pod bipod, unless it might be an actual super$$$ Parker-Hale.

I went out for the first time with my Sako A7 the other day. They claim to ship with less than one minute of angle guaranteed for a 5 shot group, for $750 (at Bass Pro they have them as well as on GunsAmerica). Now, I personally cannot shoot into a minute of angle even with a 12 power scope at 100 yards. But my group was still only an inch and a half. It is an impressive rifle and I would say the most accurate for the money.

You can get an inch and a half at 100 yds with just about any new bolt action rifle these days. I can vouch for the 700's and 20" barrels. The weatherby "submoa" will live up to it's name. My savage 110 is a bit clunky compaired to the other two but after a little work on the stock it's a good shooter too.

Remington SPS or Savage, can't go wrong with either! Savage has an advantage with the Accutrigger as Remington's trigger out of the box is like kick starting a Harley! It can be adjusted, if you are adventurous. Side by side, Savage wins due to the Accutrigger, both targets with the right shooter will be notable!

Savage would be my choice as well. I would recommend my model 10 BAS but I think that's out of your price range.

Go for the Remington 700. There is a reason the Army and Marine Corp use the 700 as their primary sniper rifle out to longer ranges than many of us will ever get to shoot. A friend of mine who is a benchrest champion told me all of the powder in a 308 is burned at about 20 inches of barrel length. I have read excellent reviews of the 700 SPS tactical. Price is reasonable also.

Just because all the powder is burned in 20" doesn't mean that the bullet won't keep gaining velocity from the very high pressure gas resulting.

BUT... .308 Win gets minimal benefit from barrels longer than 22" or so. Not zero benefit, just not that much. The chart posted above is very interesting but is only one particular combination. This article may of interest as well:

Sounds like the OP is looking for a bolt action rifle on a budget so I won't praise the M1A here.

If you are buying new, I think the Tikka T-3 offers the best value for the money. Mine is sub MOA with Federal Premiums out of the box.

I have a CZ that I would say is a better rifle, but only because I like the controlled round feed over the push feed. Sub MOA with handloads.

If you are on an extreme budget, I would rate the Savage as the best economy rifle but don't handle the above two rifles before you buy the Savage. There is no comparison in quality and operation, but it is equally accurate as the above Tikka and CZ.

All of that said, I have seen late 90's era Win. Mod 70's with controlled round feed used in excellent condition for a little under $300. That would the the best choice if you want to go used and have time to shop. I have one in 30-06 that has had trigger and action work done on it and it is right at MOA with handloads and is my favourite bolt action rifle.
