Why not consider a .45 ACP or something with less penetration? Or perhaps even birdshot in a shotgun? You can always keep a more lethal option after birdshot, just get there attention with it and then have something to back it up.

.45ACP is going to go thru sheetrock as well. Any decent defensive ammo will go thru cheap sheetrock used in modern housing.

Bad advice about using birdshot as first shot before transition to more lethal loads if needed. What if you only have a chance to take one shot? If you take one shot (your birdshot recommendation) at a BG, what makes you think that he'll let you take another shot at him if it failed to stop the assault? What if the BG is shooting back at you during the encounter? He's not going to start with a lighter load and progess to heavier loads in cast the first one didn't incapacitate you.
