I was thinking, for a SHTF scenario, or just to allow for quick replacement, what replacement parts should be kept for an Yugo M70 AK or just any AK? I am new to AK ownership, and looking the gun over, I can't really see anything that seems like it would break.

Thanks for the help.

I have these spares:

Bolt part: firing pin, extractor, retaining pins.
Spare FCG: Most of these are American and there have been reports of breakages.
Spare gas tube: Dents here will lock up your rifle.
Spare rifle: That covers everything else.

Better to have spares and not need them vs. needing and not having them. For example, I've never needed my spare AR bolt, but when my buddies AR went down during a match, I could lend it to him and keep his day from ending early.

Isn't this interesting........A similar query about AR-15 spare parts generates PAGES of responses. :neener: This one asking about AK's gets ONE response.
I think i've made my point. :D

That gets expensive quick though. I always figure the best way to get the spare parts is a complete rifle parts kit. Then I figure a complete working rifle is the best spare (one is none and all that...) so I get that built into a rifle. Then I figure I still should probably have a spares kit to fix the simple things that might break. Then I figure I should probably have a third working backup since if one breaks, I'm back down to just one rifle and one is none. So the parts kit gets built into rifle #3. Then I figure it would still be handy to have a complete set of spare parts. Then....

If you give a mouse an AK...

I guess that means that AK's are underrated.

This isn't really the answer that you were looking for, but this may be helpful.

1. My first SAR-1 had trigger slap. I bought a Romanian FCG from TAPCO in case 922(r) came off the books or I got a U.S. made stockset. I ended up getting a Red Star Arms FCG. Net effect = three extra FCG, after my second aftermarket FCG.

2. Over the years, I ended up with two extra gas tubes, since two of the stocksets I had bought came with one.

3. To this day, I have no idea how I came up with a spare gas piston. Someone must have given me one?

4. I realized one day that I had most of the parts one could conceivably need except an extra bolt assembly, so I bought one.

I realize today isn't like the '90s, but you WILL accumulate some stuff by accident over time.

So has anyone here ever had to replace anything on their AK's?

It seems like all that's prone to breakage is the FCG.

If my gas piston did get bent, I'm sure I could bend it back, or even remove it completely as a last resort. There is the wood covering it and, on my Yugo, I have the grenade sights over it as added protection. I don't really see how it could bend unless I get it run over with a car. If that were to happen, then my barrel would also be bent and my whole rifle would be out of service.

I might end up picking up an extra FCG and bolt. Do you think that would be wise?

a couple spare axis pins, a spare disconnecter spring (these get lost frequently but do not wear out) replace your recoil spring now with a Wolf +15% and never worry about it again (the original recoil springs are usually already weak) thats it, I've got one Viet bring back NFA registered that I finally had to replace the barrel on with well over 250K rnds through it it looks like hell and when my father aquired it from its previous owner it had already seen a ton of abuse, it had little value to my dad other than he had quite a firefight in order to convince the previous owner to let him have it..... he carried it instead of his M-16 for 2 hitches then brought it home and it was lost in the attic till I discovered it in 1983 and asked if I could have it.... registered it in 86 and have never done anything to it but clean off some surface rust when I first was given it (it had not been cleaned before being put away in the attic) I replaced all the springs in 1986 and have done nothing but wipe it down with oil from time to time.... it has 5% original finish and the wood is pretty oil/dirt soaked but she has never had a single failure of any kind

how much more SHTF are ya planning on than combat in the Vietnam war? are ya planning to give it less care than a VC conscript?

The trigger group on my Romanian AK wore in such a way that it eventually turned itself into a release trigger.

The FCG got replaced when I made the rifle 922r compliant for a pistol grip.

I bought this from DSA:

"Romanian 7.62x39mm Maintenance Kit. Includes recoil spring, firing pin, extractor, extractor spring, trigger/hammer spring and disconnector spring"

What do you think?
