What are the best Buckmark upgrades?

Just in case anyone else was wondering, as I was, about that slide with "ears". I couldn't find it in the Browning catalog so I gave them a call. For a blued one, it's part #B5150000 and is $62.25. It's pretty nifty, but my slide seems broken in enough that even with a TacSol rail on it it's easy enough to work in light of that price.

I'm looking at the blow-up of the buckmark. The slide you refer to is cut differently internally as well. Do you have to change out your internals on the slide as well or is it just a drop-in replacement?

Also, the Tactical Solutions integral sight rail with the built-in rear sights...
How are those sights? How do they compare to the stock Browning rear sights? Are there upgrade or fiberoptic options for that as well?

I have multiple 22 suppressors and guns and they are by far the things that get shot the most. I can shoot without having to wear hearing protection.

I'm not sure about this, all the suppressor tests I've looked at are in the ballpark of 160db unsuppressed, 130db which is still well above the threshold for hearing damage. Although suppressed is below the threshold of pain, its well above the ~90db limit for occupational noise exposure.

Now the tests I've seen are done at the muzzle 1 meter to the side and you are standing behind the gun so your exposure should be less, but hearing damage is subtle and cumulative.

I just put on Williams Fire sights on my Buckmark, works fine. Then I got home after firing it for the first time with those sights. Then and only then I noticed that the rear sight cover the rear screw hole so you can not take the slide of with out removing the sight. Or, guess you could unscrew the elevation screw and allow the sight to pivot up to gain access to the screw (but then you can always loose that damn little spring). I was able to take the barrel off by just removing the front screw and unscrewing the barrel, but you still can not gain access to the slide area for cleaning. Is there another shorter sight with fiber optics that work on a Buckmark and allow dis-assembly?

While a person should wear protection for any continuous noise above 84 dB, guns emit impulse noise. The generally accepted safe value is anything below 140 dB. But long exposure to 140 dB gunfire is bad also as the affects are cumulative. Here is an interesting link. http://www.hearingreview.com/issues/articles/2007-03_06.asp

A nice pair of grips would be a nice addition to any Buckmark, with the possible exception of the URX, which is great just the way it is.

Great link!

"As shown in Figure 4, the amount of noise reduction for a 12-gauge shotgun using the David Clark Model 27 earmuff is 31 dB; the peak level was reduced from 161 dB (red line) to 130 dB SPL (blue line). With the earmuff alone, the number of shots recommended by NIOSH would be 5 per 24-hour period"

It would seem to exactly make my point! A suppressor alone cannot be counted on as adequate hearing protection based on the ~30db reduction of most cans on the market.

See here for (2005) test results on various silencers. http://www.silencertests.com/results.htm

It clearly shows that the 22lr and some others especially subsonic cartridges can be suppressed enough to eliminate the need for ear plugs. These results were obtained out in the open, I would not shoot the 22lr suppressed indoors without ear plugs.
