What are these calipers worth

Have a chance to pick these up used. Any idea on value? Brown & Sharpe

Brown & Sharpe s a good name. I can't make out the model number? Rough guess on a white face like pictured is about $150 new so depending on condition maybe $75? I have seen Starret, Brown & Sharpe and others as low as $25 used in good condition. Since you don't mention the asking price hard to say. I based my guess on a B&S 599-579-4 model.

Brown and Sharp are right up their with Sterrit. Top of the line calipers.

What price you pay is up to you, depending on condition.

These are also the covered rack gear type which is more desirable. ( The rack gear is covered keeping dirt out of the mechanism).

Brown and Sharp has always been a good name to me, I've been machining for 20yrs+ but I also have stainless steel covered rack, imported calipers that I've been using for the same amount of time that have worked just as well, so I guess the price they are asking is key here.

My son bought a used set like that.

After paying the $60 and shipping to have them cleaned and calibrated he could have purchased new for the same total cost.

Easy enough to check eBay. My guess is 25 to 30 bucks used unless had their yearly calibration. Calibration can cost more than the tool. On meters, torque wrenches, calipers, mics, etc my annual NIST certification costs are over 2,500 bucks. For reloading, none of my stuff gets calibrated. No real wear in clean home environment on mostly brass.

Just checked ebay. According to condition on actual closed and sold similar units price was 28 to 78 on similar items in same brand. The black face dial units were fetching the higher prices.

Make sure they run smooth, no gritty feel and look for signs of them being dropped...I'm a tool maker since 1975 and have seen and owned a bunch of calipers.. I have a Brown & Sharpe caliper that I use for reloading they are the smoothest I have ever found.... I use a Mitutoyo at work because they are easier to replace and I'd hate to subject a good caliper to that kind of abuse.... I think calibration isn't necessary I found either they repeat zero or they don't ...50.00 would be a bargain if they look and feel good and repeat zero....

B&S are the best on the market, Swiss made and it shows. I am a big Starrett fan but their dial calipers can't hold a candle to B&S. I just purchased two sets on eBay for around $70 each. They are close to $300 new.

Very nice calipers, if in good condition.

I have a $25 SS caliper for reloading. They are more than good enough. If I were a tool & die maker, I'd be looking at something like B&S.

Depending upon the model number they can cost between $75 to $175 new.

At $90, it depends on how old they are and what kind of shape they are in. I use Mitutoyo calipers for reloading. If you are a machinist/tool and die maker, you want the most accurate you can get/afford. I was a tool and die maker/maintenance machinist before retiring.

If they are the model I mentioned earlier the new cost is about $150. Personally for me I would not go above $75, however, if you really want them it is your call. I have seen nice machinist gauging at flea markets and gun shows for less. I am not saying they are not worth $90, I am saying I wouldn't likely pay $90 for them.
