What are you storing your ammo in?

I've been looking for a cheap tool box or tackle box to store ammo in, but things I've found are either not cheap IMO or they are too small.

I will be storing my ammo in the boxes not loose so ammo cans are no good for me. I usually have around 1,000 round of .40 (in 10 boxes of 100) & now I have a few hundred rounds of .22 to add to that & some boxes of .223 & SG shells as soon as I order those guns.

I prefer whatever I use to have a provision for a pad lock as well.

An old metal wall-locker might be just the ticket.

Others have had success with a defunct refrigerator or freezer with a hasp & pad-lock added to the door.

I bought a metal stand-up surplus desk from a truck loading dock to keep all my powder & primers in. It has a keyed locking double door.

Check around for a surplus office furniture place and see what they might have.

Garage sale tool chest might work. I've got an old red Test Rite rolling lockable that holds all kinds of goodies.

I bought a little cheap $70 gun safe (walmart) it is probibly no good to store guns in but I took out all of the shelves inside and locked up all of my ammo. It holds alot of ammo, probibly 10 ammo cans worth.

I store my rounds in Folgers coffee containers. The larger, plastic ones filled about 2/3 full. Easy to throw a whole can or two in a backpack as needed. Lots of rounds in a reasonably compact container. This is for 7.2x39, .223 only. 9mm goes into smaller coffee cans.

I also load 6.5 Grendel and those go in 50 round plastic boxes. Those rounds are made more precisely and I have different expectations from the Grendel, so I treat them in a more dignified manner.

i normally store my ammo in there original boxes in either the containers they come in. or i use the original 50rd boxes and put them in those big green plastic ammo cans that come from cabelas. they are awesome and if you buy large quanities of ammo from cableas they ship the ammo with those boxes.

I've been filling up old Berry's boxes, and putting it all in a ammo bag. A desiccant will keep moisture out. I must admit the 6.5 Grendel is a more sophisticated round, and I'd love to see those groups!

Mostly those plastic (MTM?) 100-round ammo boxes.

I store my favorite .45 Colt load in a gallon metal paint can (loose), and when I get a .357 load worked up that I really like I'll do the same with it.

Tupperware, Rubbermaid or Sterlite "shoe boxes", ammo cans with dessicant, and a shallow wooden crate with hasp lock that originally held two howitzer shells. I like the clear Sterlite shoe boxes for storing small quantities of different calibers, labeled on the ends, in neat stacks in a bookcase or in a metal upright locker. Good for grab and go to the range without foraging and small multiple boxes are easy on the back.

If you're really into storing large quantities, you can google specs for welding a metal chest with ventilation and reinforcement that won't create a bomb in your basement if your ammo cooks off. You're still in serious trouble, but mitigation helps.

Magic Man,

I store most of my ammo in an old footlocker from the mid 1940's. The rest of it mostly goes into ammo cans. I just don't understand why you think you cannot store boxed ammo in ammo cans - I do it all of the time. Why would ammo have to be loose to store it in a can?

I also store some of my ammo in a grab and go kit, and more of it in a grab and go attache case (influenced no doubt by all those Secret Agent Man, Man From Uncle and Get Smart shows when I was a kid).

All the best,
GB
