What are you using for home defence? Rifle, Pistol or shotgun?

Not to pick, but this is maybe kinda like asking what do you use on your car: paste-wax, ice-scraper, or lug wrench ?...

All three, others too, it depends on the circumstances.

My primary is an 870 loaded with #4 buck, my backup (My wife's primary) is an M-1 carbine.

When you are fighting for your life, you need to use all the force you can. The only reason we use handguns for anything is because they are more practical to keep with you at all times. I not only believe that a handgun is what you use to fight your way back to a long gun, I also believe that you should keep a long gun in your home and your vehicle whenever you can.

the "drag his dead ass inside" was a joke. but make sure that if you shoot an intruder (i pray i never have to!) make sure he's dead, so he cant testify against you.

Barky bitey speedster beagle

I guess you want the burglar to be loved to death!
My beagle loves to bay at strangers, but only so they'll play with him. Great watchdogs, horrible guard dogs!

All of the above for different applications.

Pistol for room clearing. Usually the gun on my bedside is the pistol I carried last during the day. (.40 S&W M&P Compact. or Ruger LCP.) If I hear a bump in the night, this is the gun that's with my while I check it out. Its smaller and thus more easily controllable in close quarters, not to mention I can easily handle it while flipping on a light switch or opening the [locked] bedroom door.
The shotgun is my fiancee's home defense weapon. It stays with her in the bedroom.
The AR-15 is the SHTF weapon, as its loaded with a 30 round magazine with 2 more ready to go.

I keep a Kimber Crimson Carry .45 with Gold Dots and a G19 both by my side of the bed and my wife keeps a small frame 1911 on her side of the bed.

870 with #4 shot and a Glock 19. In my career I saw actual badboys shot with the 12 gauge, using #4 shot. Lethal everytime. The 12 gauge with the right load is a flatout mankiller at house ranges. No denying it.

We have a rottweiler downstairs guarding the first floor, a Mossberg 500A in my Glock and BUG on my bedside table and a 1911 on my husband's den. No, I am not comfortable with a rifle but I can shoot it if I have to. I carry everywhere, including the bathroom.

I really hope that your state has airtight castle doctrine, because if you have to go to court after shooting an intruder with that set-up, you are going to be in deep crap. Using a machine gun won't look good, nor a suppressor, and handloads are also often avoided for self defense. I'm not trying to be a dick about it, I just don't think that it is the best idea.
If I was concerned with "looking good" I'd put on a tuxedo before I shot someone.

Michigan has a castle doctrine with immunity for lawful self defense. The act of self defense is weighed, not the manner in which it was delivered.

I also happen to own a company that is an 07 FFL and 02 SOT which manufactures machine guns, silencers, and ammunition. One of the perks.

I dont like to keep guns all over the house, just one in a book box next to the bed. Its not one of my Rugers but it will work just fine.

Depends on what the bump in the night was. Here, it's more likely to be a furry varmint than a 2 legged varmint. Anything from a skunk to a grizzly is a distinct possibility. As I look around me, there's a couple Winchester 94's, a Winchester 71 (.348), a 375 H&H, couple bolt 30-06's, 35 Whelen, a Ruger 45 SA on the night stand, a Smith 44 in a rig hanging by the door, another Smith 44 in the night stand, a Colts Dragoon on the wall, and a 22 rifle nearby. All are loaded, and have been for as long as I've owned them. Just whatever the need happens to be, and what comes to hand first.

Never had much use for shotguns, nor been overly impressed with them in general. Fun for shooting clays tho.

Springfield XDM, Kimber and a Smith & Wesson Highway Patrolman (.357) in a safe with a keypad for home defense. All of the long guns are locked up in another safe. Too many of my daughter's friends are in my house to leave long guns unlocked.

whew! Well at least we don't have to worry about you actually seriously injuring anyone... :D

ok ,sorry, i didn't mean to open a can of worms. back to the discussion, .410 revolver any comments?

Comments on the .410 revolver. WHY? Much better choices out there, from affordable shotguns, autopistols, or the ubiquitous medium frame .357 revolver.

The concern isn't necessarily you getting convicted of anything, but rather the risk of you being forced to spend tremendous sums of money to defend yourself. Additionally, your M-16 may be confiscated as evidence. Hopefully it will be treated well, and eventually returned.

Gary Fadden somewhat famously wound up spending about $45,000 (in the mid 80's) to defend what should have been a clear-cut case of self-defense, after he used an AC556.

Maybe Michigan law has some statute to render this point moot. You may wish to consult with your lawyer. Maybe you already have. I'm just repeating what I've heard--that almost anything else is a better choice if you need to defend yourself.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I would like to ask what type of firearm you would rather use for home defence and why. Are you comfortable and confident with it's capabilities?
Is your primary defensive firearm a shotgun? Do you lean towards the use of a pistol or a rifle why?
I strongly prefer a 12 gauge Remington 870 18" barrel with #4 buckshot.
While I was in the service I used the venerable 45ACP but choose not to use a pistol for home defence. I ran an experiment on my own with a sandbag (nonscientific of course). I filled half of that sandbag with sand and hung it from 18" of wire. I emptied 7 rounds of ball ammunition and the sandbag moved 2 inches maximum. I emptied the sand out and 4 rounds remained from that 45ACP pistol. I shot from 15 feet away.

That little experiment convinced me a pistol is still a pistol.

I only ask that this thread be educational to THR readers. Please no caliber wars and no flaming.

My back up will always be old slabsides the 45ACP.

10+1 HP+ in a Glock & a shotgun

Because the Glock is in the finger safe under the bed, and you use your handgun to get back to your long gun!

Comfortable: Yes.
Confident: Yes.
In it's capabilities? Yes.
In the user's ability? Definitely. Routinely 'tuned.'

The real deal is we sleep upstairs, and if they want something downstairs, fine. Stuff is stuff, and replaceable.

Touch the stairs, and its a game changer.

I hope that doesn't sound freakish, coming from a woman. We've simply talked this over to great detail.

I'll stick with a surefire forended 870 to dispense shot.

+1 for "all of the above"
the Colt M1911A1 and surefire light is in/on the bedside stand. the Kalashnikov, Marlin 336, and Mossburg 500 are two steps from the bed.
immediate threat: i have a 1911.
things that go bump in the night: i have a carbine-length semi-auto rifle with 30 rounds of .30 cal and a scattergun with a few .000 bucks two steps away.
country livin'... ain't it grand.
the purpose of your pistol is to fight your way back to your shotgun. the purpose of your shotgun is to fight your way back to your rifle. which you should never have laid down in the first place.

hear hear. the judge's marketing tactic of trying to convince people that a .410 shell from a snubby revolver is a viable SD option truly hurts my feelings.
sure, it also chambers and fires .45colt, but so do a LOT more firearms that are much better suited for SD/HD.
gosh, if you are partial to .45colt, why not go for a levergun in that caliber and a revolver to burn the same ammo?
i would NEVER EVER EVER trust a load of .410cal buck to stop an aggressor.
YMMV.
