My Savage does pretty good with :
Lake City cases
CCI small rifle standard primers
24gr of IMR 4198 under a 40gr bullet which can be....
Speer 40gr Soft point
Hornady 40gr V-max
Nosler 40gr BT
(Accuracy edge goes to the PolyCarbonate tips, economy edge goes to the Speer Soft point which still puts in pretty fair accuracy inside it's range)
(Inside 100 yards or so, the 35gr V-max - loaded with the above mix - can be quite amusing, and explosive, for little varmints)
Lake City cases

Which rifle?
I have the 12FV .223. It has the 26" bbl, synth stock, and accutrigger. I used a SSS mount/base with Millett rings. It has a Tasco 6-24x40 mil-dot scope for now. I adjusted the trigger to the lightest setting. Not bad. I need a new scope and can not make-up my mind as to which one to buy.
Bushnell 4200/6-24x40MD, Weaver GS/6-20x40, Nikon Monark/ 6.5-20x44, Burris Sig/ 6-24x42, Sightron/6-24x44, Leu/6-20x40.
This is driving me nuts.

I recently acquired a Savage model 10 FP. I'm looking for a scope, too. Any thoughts on Springfield Armory's 5.56?

Thanks, Hot Brass; any suggestions? It will most often be employed to control prairie dogs, with an occasional coyote thrown in for variety.

Trying to find the right scope for my varmint rifle. I have settled on the Bushnell "Elite 4200 6-24x40". I have read many, many, positive posts on this scope. Not to knock the other scopes, but from what I have read this scope tracks well, has very good glass, and is in the price range that won`t break the bank. $400.00 range, maybe less, and the glass quality is better than some costing hundreds more.

I've a .22-250 with the 4000 series = 6X24X = nice enough scope, but that wasn't what you were asking in the initial thread-post.
Any load, for any rifle needs to be developed to make certain what shoots best - granted, a decent enough scope can help with the process - along with proper bench technique, decent trigger, decent loads ... decent .....
Nobody can post a "what's best for my rifle" - ever.
You have to find out what that is yourself, because rifles are as much a different personality as is your wife.

Sorry for not getting back to your question. The above mentioned scopes are some very nice scopes(see post April 7th). I want a scope to hunt varmints also. I mainly hunt ground squirrels. Some shots are out to 300 plus yards. I am going with the Bushnell 6-24x40. This scope can be had for $400.00 and SWFA and very close at Bear Basin. I have been looking for a few weeks, as I don`t have the funds to buy this scope and that one to get it right. Lots of praise goes to the Bushnell 6-24x40. Good luck in your choice.

i guess as far as i'm concerned, leupold is the way to go... but, sometimes it is hard to justify the cost of a leupold... scopes also worthy of mention are sightron, weaver, and nikon. also, an honorable mention to cabela's alaskan guide line... really are pretty good scopes, especially for the money.

Thanks for your input, folks! Any thoughts on Burris? By the way, the most accurate load in my rifle so far is Ramshot TAC behind a 55 gr. Hornady V-max at about 3200 fps. I've loaded some 69 gr. Sierra HPBT's on a friend's recomendation, but haven't had a chance to try them yet.
