What aspects of shooting do NOT interest you?

Phrased differently, what articles in a gun rag will you skip over to get to the “good stuff”?

For me, the following have little attraction:

The latest and greatest AR-15 style rifle (How many railed-up, Magpul stocked M4 clones do we need?)

The latest and greatest non-AR MSR (Tavor, SCAR) that is a study in the use of plastic parts.

Modern style muzzleloaders and their associated sabot loaded projectiles.

Any cartridge that ends in “Short Magnum”.

Plastic or rubber tipped bullets (both handgun and rifle).

Safetyless poly/striker pistols.

Modern entry level hunting rifles, like the Ruger American or Savage Axis.

Gun games that pretend to be about defensive shooting, but use “non-carry” weapons and holsters.

I am only in my late 30’s, but well on my way to being an old curmudgeon!

OP our tastes are mighty similar. I don't mind plastic tipped ammo, but it isn't really an interesting point for me to ooh and ahh over. I kinda like the entry level plastic fantastic bolt guns though, there is so much competition in that market that a 250 dollar gun may actually be a pretty useful gun. I just like watching everybody one-up each other by bringing the el-cheapo gun closer to the flagship model.

Actually, I gave up on reading gun rags a long time ago.

I will sometimes read specific articles (online, usually after a google search) about firearms (or accessories) that I am considering acquiring.

Even my American Rifleman does not get a thorough read. Rarely do I see an article that grabs my attention.

Come to think of it, the source of most of my searches for further information on a firearms subject can probably be traced to posts that I have read here at THR.

nothing against them - they just don't excite me so much.
i own a few examples of some i listed above.
the fewer of the above I purchase, the more there will be for their connoisseurs to enjoy, so no problem, right?

I like AR-15s, the modularity, the affordability, the accuracy, etc.
I don't like the "tactical" aspect of shooting. Didn't care for it in the Army, don't care for it now.

Not too keen on cleaning either.

I'll skip over an article that tells me I must have nine pounds of stuff bolted to an AR. However, an article that looks at which light to mount gets my attention.

An article explaining how the new plastic gun is so much better than the old plastic gun. They're all plastic! Explain to me differences in trigger mechanism or frame redesign, now I'm interested.

Articles detailing a hunt that is impossible for me are non-starters. However, tell me stories of your Alaskan hunt or African Safari, I am interested. I can save money to go if I wanted to. Just don't tell me about the wonderful opportunity on a piece of land owned by your Uncle Willy who won't give me permission to hunt.

Wildcats. If they were popular enough to write about, they wouldn't be wildcats. If they did anything much better than a standard cartridge, they wouldn't be wildcats.

Ambiguous praise of a firearm. Don't tell me you liked it, that's subjective. Tell me why you did or didn't like it. Compare to well known specimens so people can walk away with useful opinions.

ETA: the "gun game" thing. I like me some IDPA or even an informal match. But I do get peeved when folks call these "training". They are a very fun game, but trying to win encourages you to ignore some very important things like situational awareness and clearing spaces. If you're gonna write about them, be enthused about what they are, not try to pretend they're something else.

Since my shotguns are target guns and not zombie slayers, and I'm too damn old for running and gunning and trying to get down on one knee, anything connected with those I just pass by. (Most likely why i do not subscribe to any typical gun rags - they're the same old same old every month with a different pic.

I'll keep my plastic and metal striker guns as they are for SD/HD, but wasting time reading about them doesn't interest me either.

I'm interested in most everything related to firearms. Firearms might have been a better question that "shooting" because it seems your list and other responses list guns of no interest. I'm not particularly interested in the sports associated with shotguns or target shooting with rifles or handguns, but I am interested in the firearms used. Never met a gun I didn't like. Some more than others however.

the things i skip are the "i just got this new gun today and put 100 rounds through it and here's why it's the best gun ever and you should buy it" crap

i wish i had time for some of the historical stuff. i'll read that when i retire

The 400,000th iteration of the AR15
Don't care about shotguns much
Obscure cartridges I'll never own a gun for
Guns with tacky paint jobs or weird colors

Any article that says ergos or a particular trigger is better than another. Those things are subjective and depend on your hand.

Political "Your gun rights are under attack!" articles. I believe they are under attack but I can only read so much of that stuff.

Boutique bullets that claim to do something better than a good HP or hard cast
Reviews of optics............. I just don't care that much. I'll do my research when I need to.

I don't hate any of these topics, and they have relevance to shooting today, I just don't spend a lot of time reading them.

You aren't alone. If I didn't believe in being a member of the NRA, I sure wouldn't pay for an American Rifleman subscription.

Guns that aren't made of walnut and carbon steel. A proper gun is either blued or left in the "white".

Muzzle loaders that look like a Star Wars prop. A Kentucky Rifle is a gun; a stainless steel in line bull pup is a contraption.

ARs are wonderful guns, accurate, reliable, the best in the world at what they are intended to do, BUT: If I see one on the cover of a magazine I won't even pick it up. It also is amusing to me that what was intended to be light weight, handy little gun has evolved into a heavy for its size contraption. Good God! How many gizmos can you hang on one gun? I shot a friend's AR the other day. It had just about every contraption (my favorite word) hanging off of it that money could buy. It weighed ten pounds!!! Without the magazine!!

What was that old complaint about the M-14 being too heavy?

I skip over shotgun articles, I'm just not a shotgun man.

Same thing with hunting stories and articles, I've never been much of a hunter. Tried it many times in my youth. I think the game animals were smarter than me.

Guess that's it. Damn. I had hoped to use "contraption" at least one more time......

I'll read about almost any gun, even if I'm not interested in that gun, as long as the author takes a somewhat creative approach to the article. The tactical craze going on in he world of guns right now gets pretty repetitive, though.

Rifle magazine is the only print publication I read with any regularity. They tend to cover a pretty wide range of topics and the historical articles are typically pretty interesting. For example, I may never want to go look for a rifle in 6mm Lee Navy, but I'm still interested in the round's history.
