What barrel length for HD?

I've fired hundreds if not thousands of 5.56 from a M4 indoors in many different types of buildings without hearing protection. It really isn't something to be concerned about in any way. Sure, it's loud, but you won't be deaf, you won't be stunned out of your wits and you will still be fully able to carry on conversation. And trust me, when that adrenaline is pumping you won't even notice it. Muzzle flash isn't bad either. At the ranges you would be firing it is less of an aimed shot than an instinctive shot from muscle memory.

If I had my way... AK SBR with 12.5" barrel and suppressor.

The suppressor negates the shorter barrel, but it'll be a little easier on the ears.

But for now, 16" rifles and 18" shotguns for me.

I thought of it the other way. The shorter barrel negates the downside of the suppressor.

As to supressor being the same as full auto to a jury...its the same to me, as well. If it's legally owned, I don't see the problem. See, I am looking at whether or not lethal force was justified. If it is justified with no gun (i.e. baseball bat, like many people believe should be used for HD) it is justified with something that has 5 tax stamps on it. Jury might see differently, but I base my decisions based on what is most likely to keep me alive...that I can afford.

Anyway, I think we're getting a little off with the legal issue, although I guess it is relevant to barrel length. I got my initial question answered...there is a difference in muzzle blast, but the shorter length would probably be better for my purposes. Down the road, when I do make the switch, I'll look at my options.

.223 inside unsuppressed is going to have an incredible amount of blast any way you cut it, so like others I'd tend to go shorter... 16" for non-NFA. Personally I would probably not go for one of these 7.5 "pistols"; if for no other reason than the flash they make is impressive in broad daylight, never mind the black of night with your eyes adjusted. At the least I'd shoot it some in the dark first to know what I was getting into.

I wouldn't be worried about whether a couple hundred FPS is going to lead to picture perfect fragmenation or not either.... who cares? There are 29 more where that one came from.

My first/only suppressor (wanted one for a while, just never got around to it until recently) is pending now, and when it comes in I am probably going to put it on an 11.5 AR and have that as the proverbial "bedside gun".

-I live in SC; at LEAST 25% of any given jury is likely to be highly pro-gun.
-We have a pretty air tight castle doctrine in SC... a shooting in your home of a true intruder has virtually no chance of going to trial here.
-And most importantly, I like my hearing and plan to hold on to it as long as possible. Taking the flash down to zero wouldn't hurt either.

Actually, I'd probably just carry a 20-rounder in it.
