My loving wife got me a Cabellas gift certificate and I want to get a bi-pod for my Remington 700 PSS. It has the 20 inch barrel. There are a lot of varieties of the Harris pods? What do I need?
Thanks

Didn't like how clunky the Harris bipods were...

With the exposed springs and all.

The Parker-Hales are beefy, but expensive.

The Versapods are a cheaper copy of the Parker-Hales.

I went with the aluminum B-Square Roto-Tilt bipod for my 700 PSS. The springs are internal, it makes for a clean installation, and still attaches via the sling swivel studs. I used the version that has the extendable legs of the length to allow prone or sitting.

I understand the Caldwell bipod, as sold by Midway, is pretty close to the Roto-Tilt in design.

good question. i have been wondering the same thing. i'm looking for a bipod for my rem 700 that i built into a kind-of beginner sniper rifle. harris seems like the most popular choice but i will look into the other brands mentioned.

concerning which height to buy, for a sniper shooting from prone, wouldn't you want the lowest (6-9") bipod to keep your profile down? or are those too low for prone shooting?

about the notch legs, these are basically spring loaded, right? what are their advantages? i'd think they would be good for like a 3gunner who needs to get the legs out fast, but not as good for a sniper who needs to be silent.

The Harris is a good one, and if the springs bother you, or are a bit noisy, get some black, or whatever color strikes your fancy, heat shrinkable tubing from radio shack or any electronics supply store.
Slide that over the springs, and shrink it(torch, lighter, etc.) to your liking.

I am assuming you will be shooting this rifle from positions other than bench mainly so I would recommend the Harris Model L(s). That means the 9-13" swivel model. Do not get the locked model that does not swivel. The swivel is super handy for fieldwork as you don't have to adjust the legs in order to compensate for your gun being canted.

I only have one Model L (s) and would love to have two more. I also have the bigger 25(s) but that is for coyote calling so I can sit on the side of a steep hill in a juniper bush if I want. I don't think that would be necessary in your case.
