Hello all,

I was able to take a hike a few days ago and brought along a few relatively new blades to see if I felt they were handy enough to carry with me into the bush frequently. I brought my Mora 510, Fiskars hatchet and Leatherman Wave. All performed quite well and were handy to have around. I didn't find that I needed anything more or less.

I'm slowly warming back up to synthetic handles on a working tool, as the first hatchet I had with a polymer handle snapped in half on the first outing with it. I bought the fiskars due to cost and reputation, and am really happy with it's performance. I've tried to abuse it but just can't find it's breaking point. The edge is at a good angle and is very easy to sharpen, and cuts very well. I even made some fuzz sticks with it.

The Mora is probably my favorite fixed blade and is just a pleasure to use and carry. It's incredibly sharp and easy to sharpen quickly. (I also recently made my first sheath which was for this blade:

I just wanted to share my experiences with this trio as my main tools when out and about, and I'm really interested in seeing others' favorites.

What blades do you like to carry into the woods? How do you like to carry it/them? I'd love to see pics, especially of blades in use!

Take care-

I get cheap camp hatchets. I tend to loose those. My folding saw, fixed blade knife and multi are all Gerber. The blade is about a 5 in. drop pt. The saw is the one you can change out for wood or bone.

I've always felt like Gerber (Fiskars) is the perfect compromise between cost and quality.

I always take my Buck 110. It's tough as nails and keeps an edge for a surprising amount of time. It's seen it's fair share of use.

I've been looking for a fixed blade for a little while now. How do you like the Mora? I've been pondering a 440 or a 780. I can't see myself taking a nicer blade into the woods, so the Mora seems like a good option (from what Ihear, good quality for the price you pay)

Nice holster by the way :)

I always have a Ka-BAR.
I usually also bring a 20" machete, a kukri or an Estwing hatchet depending on what I anticipate needing to do.
If I just expect to clear brush or saplings the machete does fine. If expect to do more strenuous work, the heavier kukri or hatchet does a better job.
It's surprising how quickly a sharp kukri can fell a small tree!

good choices!

a medium sized fixed blade and a small hatchet are a hard combo to beat in the woods. I usually have my Victorinox Super Tinker in a pocket as well just for emergencies like opening any wine bottles I find while hiking( grin).

Hunting, fishing, kayaking, hiking, whatever... I carry my Leatherman Wave and a SOG Hunter Revolver. I figure if I can't handle whatever comes up with those two, I should probably just go back home.

The only blades a real man ever needs

I never venture off into the woods without one of my SAKs with a saw. Usually the SAK Farmer or OHT (One Handed Trekker). I rarely even leave my house without the Farmer model. When in the woods I usually bring an additional folder. One of the following usually accompany me, Boker Trance, Spyderco Delica, Benchmade Griptillian or Buck 110. If I bring a fixed blade it's going to be my Bark River Mikro Canadian or RJ Martin Handi Man.

Benchmade/ Emerson CQC7

The knife that I have carried daily for 10 years.

If it's a day hike I usually just take a a SAK and a Benchmade Grip. For overnights the afore-mentioned SAK, a lightweight folding "Swedish" saw, and a 4" fixed blade. Car camping allows for an axe to be available for campfire chores.

I have one of those Friskars hatchets. Neat little implement, that.

Usually I have at least my Leatherman and one of my more rugged/less pretty EDC knives like one of the Kershaws or similar. Ontario Knife field machete (20") on my belt, and the hatchet and any other implements I think I'll need in the backpack or toolbox.

Hunting I carry along, but not on my person a bunch of knives. But on my person I have my SOG Bowie, a Leatherman Wave, and either my Emerson CQC7, or Pentagon Elite (SOG). I also ahev a nice hatchet for the camp, nd a machete, and a full size Axe.

Usually have a whittler, Case Seahorse that is for whittling around the camp.

Not in the "woods", as I live in the desert, but always on my person:

Custom Rob Patton bowie on belt, SAK hiker in pocket.

When on rescues, the same two above, along with in the pack an SAK multi-tool, and strapped to the outside of the pack is a Cold Steel SRK.

Depends on if I'm hunting or just hiking. The Mora (eriksson) 510 is a great take-along. I have several and one is permanently assigned to my hunting pack along with a folding saw. I often lash a GB hunters axe to the outside.
If I'm just hiking in the woods with the dog I usually carry my hand forged Roselli "carpenter's knife".

My picks

bensdad : I've always felt like Gerber (Fiskars) is the perfect compromise between cost and quality.

- Dittos on the Gerber stuff! :D

now my woods/mountain/ traveling knives are as follows:

Gerber LMF II

this is my large fixed blade with a combo edge, shock absorbent, electrically isolated handle, and a very tough sheath. the pointed pommel is also very handy as glass breaker and hammer.

Big Cutting Tools i carry one or the other of these:

- cold steel Kukri that i stripped the worthless epoxy from and blued the blade.
-Gerber Backpack hatchet, not as good at chopping as the Kukri, but it splits wood better.

Multi-tool

Gerber Multipliers MP600 needlenose. i tried the Leatherman for a while but i didnt like how the grips felt and i dont like how the springs keep it open unlike the Gerber. plus, i REALLY like the saw feature that allows you to carry many different blades and switch them out as needed by using jigsaw blades.

i also sometimes carry a Gerber Gator with the 4" bowie or clip point blade with combo edge when i want to go light.

i usually have a CRKT M16-12Z folded up in my pocket.

I always take this knife with me when I take a hike with my dog. I used to bring the hatchet along when I went camping, but now I have a Gränsfors Bruks axe that is becoming my favourite.
In the third picture, you can see my forest companion and my perfectly camouflaged knee:scrutiny:

gun and knife

When I just take the dogs for a walk in the woods nearby, I usually carry a CRKT Mirage Large. It is a liner lock, 5.125" closed with about a 3.625" blade. That has been my usual pocket knife for a while - I also have a CRKT M16 and a Spyderco Military that I will will swap out. They are about the same size.

I also carry a sidearm, typically whatever was my carry gun that day, usually a J frame.

When I go for a more extended hike with the dogs, which I do several times a week, I carry the Mirage and pistol, and in addition carry an emergency bag that includes emergency medical supplies, flashlights, etc. In the bag are a Cold Steel Carbon V SRK, a Cold Steel Voyager Large with serrated edge and a Leatherman tool.

As well as a Springfield XD 9mm with XML light.

So, yes, when I go for an extended hike with the dogs I may be carrying two pistols and three knives, plus a Leatherman.

I like my Lueko Puukko set. The big one is for chopping and heavy work and the little one does all the rest.
LUEKOPUUKKO.jpg

For walks in the woods, I usually have my SOG Seal Pup Elite and a SAK. I actually want to get another SAK, always want to try out another one. If I'm hunting, I have a SOG Hunter Revolver and usually a Remington bullet knife (trapper model). What I carry from one week to the next changes as does the selection of available knives. If I think I will be busting brush, I'll carry a SAK, Hunter Revolver (for the saw), and a 12" Ontario machete; or my latest addition, the KaBar Machete Cutlass which I'm pretty enamored with at the moment.

I almost always carry my Bark River Knife and Tool North Star with me into the woods. Has proven its weight in gold many times and it my most trusted bush craft knife I own so far. It has a thick blade which makes for great battoning and also is relatively light weight. I own many more expensive knives, but none of them feel as good in the hand and have proven themselves to me as well as my BRKT North Star.
