What brands of Magazines to avoid?

USA mags have done me wrong for a Mini-30. Out of four mags, three worked about 40% of the time and one worked 0%.

I trust factory mags and Mec-Gars.

I have never had any luck with USA & ProMag magazines!

Mixed results with Triple K Mags - Many have been flawless (.32acp for Colt 1903 PM Hammerless), others poor functionality.

I bought two MecGar Magazines for a Ruger MKII and neither would function. I then bought straight from ruger and those worked well. This was several years ago but, at that time, dealers told me that the magazines MecGar made for several factory guns worked well but their after market replacements generally were very inferior.
It would seem that it would be less trouble all around to standardize on quality but a smith at the Infinity company told me that there are a limited number of companies making magazines and the end user defines specifications as to metal treatment and springs. They supposedly follow those guidelines on contracted magazines but cheap out on their own.

My dad has 3 pre-ban 15-round Triple K mags for his S&W 910 that are terrible. I don't remember ever going through a magazine without at least one malfunction. The lips are probably 5 or 6mm wider than the factory ones so the malfunctions are usually double feeds.

Magazines

None of my 1911's like Pachmeyer's.(sp) They will not drop out at slidelock without pulling back on the slide. joeyt

I must be one of the lucky ones when it comes to USA mags. I happen to have a couple of 30 rd. mags for a Mini-14, and haven't had any problems at all, besides having to give the charging handle a little forward assist on the first round.

Maybe I'm just lucky...

Same here. Once I got serious about my shooting, I realized there were a few things I'd never again buy strictly for low price, and magazines and holsters & belts were at the top. Too important for reliable, safe carry.

What Magazines?

I would definitely avoid Cosmo, "How to please your man", I mean really! :neener:

I'll use pro mags or other cheapos at the range but finish off with factory mags & carry loads to make sure the gun functions as it should.

A few years ago, on a whim, I impulse-purchased an 8-round Triple-K stainless magazine for my Springfield 1911. Got home and tried inserting the magazine into the 1911--it outright didn't fit the magwell opening.

Brought it back to the store the next day, and the salesperson tried inserting it into a variety of 1911s in the display case. It wouldn't fit into a single one. He offered to exchange it; I said no thanks, I'd like a refund.

I had a pachmeyer 1911 magazine a few years ago. The magazine body tore in half right in front of the bump pad. No cowboy action here- just normal insertion.

The military bought a lot of ChekMate mags.

I haven't seen any outside the Army. However, if you see the, avoid them. They are not worth the cash. Said that anyone was allowed to sell such trash to people going into harms way.

USA mags are worthless. Well maybe a cent or two for scrap. Other than a poster here, I've never heard of anyone that has had luck with them. JUNK is the best way to describe them. PLEASE don't ever use them for anything important, like personal defense.

I have a few 8 round P90 mags and they have been flawless. I have 2 pro mag 15 rounders for my P89 and they function well, but they rattle with more than 12 rounds in the mag. Mec Gar works perfect in the P89.
