I got my liscence in about a month ago and haven't bought any C&R rifles yet. I'm working on a very fixed budget. I really don't have this love affair for an SKS but it seems like everyone in the world has one. I am trying to decide between an SKS an M48 a VZ24 or anything else. Given that I'm gonna ger a M44 cause they are so cheap. Remember that I'm on a tight budget and please sell me on what to do next.

Well, if you're on a really tight budget, then get whatever you can afford. If you're on a tight budget, get what you want because with a C&R, eventually you'll have at least two of everything. :p

My vote would be to skip the SKS for now and get either an M48 or the VZ.

What do you have so far?
What do you want the new gun for?
Most of the cheap C&Rs are bolt guns, the SKS is semi.
If you want something that may be useful as a SHTF gun, then get the SKS.
If you have others that already fit that bill, then the K31 is cool, and they seem to be drying up some.
The M44 is a great gun, too.

The C&R liscense is great for people on a tight budget, you can buy at wholesale prices instead of retail.

The list of guns to get really depends on timeing, a good deal 2 years ago may be 2-3 times the price today. Pick a gun you like out of the current bargins because they don't last long. There are a lot of good bargins out there but some have dried up in just the last two years that I have been watching the market (I have had my C&R FFL for only 4 months). Also, watch for free shipping deals as this can really make it a good deal once you figuire the OTD price.

Pretty much ANY working gun for $39.99 is a must have! Think about it, how long are the $39.99 deals going to last? You can't buy much today for $40 but sometimes you can get a quality mil sulp rifle, it blows my mind! It is supposed to save you money but like others, I find that I buy more guns than I used to just because they are cheap and I can get them shipped to my home without going through a dealer.

As for good C&R guns, it depends on what you like and what you want it for. I like my Yugo SKS and my Yugo M48A. I also have a CZ-52, M44, Turk Mauser that are O.K. but not up to the SKS and M48 IMHO.

If you're looking to go really cheap, it's hard to beat the M44. Everyone has them right now for under 50 bucks. But there's alot of really good deals out there right now. The best one IMHO is the M48/M48A. I think I might have to buy me another one if I ever get my new address on my C&R.

I'll vote for the Swiss K-31 as one of the best deals going in the C&R market. Cheapest I've seen for a single is $110. F & S Inc, I believe.

It's more expensive than many other offerings but the quality is tremendous.

The biggest downside is the non-availability of commercial ammo. What is on the market is not cheap and the swiss milsurp (GP11) is not cheap either. It sure shoots great though!

Enjoy the new license -- Rob

If you want a cool gun cheaper than the best buy K-31 I suggest a Steyer M-95 Carbine. I got a new in cosmoline one for $75.00. Get the one that has 'S' on reciever, not the Hungarian one. These are 8x56 R and are also called 8mm'S' . The ammo is available on 10 round strippers for $4.00 or less in bulk it is 1939 BEAUTIFUL ammo with 216 grain bullets at 2400fps from the stubby 19" carbine barrel! Mine is almost as accurrate as the K-31! they make a good brush gun as is! I hear ammo is coming some (as is 7.5x55 swiss) but you can make 8x56 pretty easy from 7.62x54 Russian cases . Buy some 1939 ammo NOW though as the stripper clips will be needed later. These guns are THE sleepers IMHO.:D

So how do you get a C&R lisence. I assume that is a Curio & Relic lisence. And does that make it so you don't have to ship rifles your order to an FFL dealer?

For inexpensive in near new condition, I would actually go for the M48 Mauser while there's still a lot of them out there. Next (price being the consideration, otherwise this would be first) a Swiss K31 While "Goods" are still to be had. You'll be hard-pressed to find VZ24s in Very Good condition anymore (if someone knows of a source post it!) There's nothing wrong with the Russians - I have several and like them - but I think they'll be sticking around at cheap prices for quite some time. I'd work on getting stuff where the supply looks like it will be drying up.

TimH, go here: http://www.cruffler.com/becomingcruffler.html to get all the info you need to get your C & R license.

Boiled down, you download the forms from the ATF site. Send a letter to your local Chief LEO informing him (NOT asking) that you're applying for the license. Send off the forms to ATF and wait. Once you get your license you'll be able to get dealer pricing from many distributors as well as from companies like Brownells and Midway.
