What caliber did this?....

i'll throw my guess in. as was stated before, a centerfire rifle bullet would have penetrated both sides of the tube. i believe that was made by a centerfire pistol bullet. probably between 32-38 cal.

Normally I would take this to PM, but this is the second time you have chastised somebody for not allowing public access to their private property.

America is not a socialist country (yet). A man's land is his to do what he pleases with.

I'll give you the reasons I don't allow strangers on my place though:

1. I worked all my life to buy this place, to hunt and shoot on it as I please. You're free to do the same thing.

2. The very first year we lived here, somebody shot the head off of a great horned owl on my place. So much for respecting my place.

3. Last fall, I had a few guests here hunting doves. One of them (a THR member, no less) left a pile of hulls and an empty shotgun shell box on the ground where he was standing. I wouldn't do that in his yard.

If you would like access to all land, feel free to move to a country with no private ownership of land. Otherwise, respect other's private property.

AMEN.

I second the fact that measuring the hole would narrow down the possibilities...

I just fill that were shooting are selfs in the foot by not opening are land to new and younger shooters,so you had to pick up some shells, that guy will have a life time of good memories, but i would bring it up the next time I seen him

It looks like about the size of a 9mm and about the same punching power, I think 7.62X39 would have more than enough kick to punch through both sides because it is relatively thin metal but that's just a guess.

I have shot things like this before, and ANY high powered hunting round, .223 or 30-06, would goo right through this. THe higher velocity rounds like the .243 would do it even easier, and leave less of a dent. The large dent (in my expreiance, high velocity rounds leave less of a dent, more of a hole, correct me if wrong) and low penetration make me think high velocity .22 or .22 mag. Possibly something like the .22 hornet, but no high power round.

:banghead:

Thats not the point you don't trash another man's house or his land. I think you feel as if you are entitled to hunt on the places you want to hunt. Wrong. Bubbles your quotes sound strangely similar to the logic that a lot of poachers use. I am not accusing you of anything but you are walking a fine line. The posters property has been vandalized and you are rationalizing it by expressing your opinion about private property. Back on point, sorry about your gate a lot of work goes into maintaining fences and gates and the last thing you need is someone adding more to your list of things to do.
Sorry for the rant.

The point is he shouldnt have to clean up any of it. Sure, i could understand maybe a few scattered, maybe he dropped 1 or 2.

But a pile [even a small one] and an empty box has no excuse. If someone lets you use something of theirs, it is your responsibility to keep it how it was. If the owner doesnt specifically say "sure, leave your hulls on the ground i dont care much" then you must assume you have to clean up all of your, well how you say...****.

theres no way around that. you have to be polite and responsible. end of story.

The way I look at it - it's a matter of common courtesy and returning the favor.
If somebody does me the favor of allowing me access to their land, i'm going to return the favor by making sure i'm aware of any mess I leave behind, and acting in a respectful way.
If somebody does me the favor, and i return it by crapping all over their property and acting disrespectful, I certainly expect that courtesy will not be extended to me in the future.

Not sure, but on the land question it is yours. I don't let anybody on my place that I don't know well. Until the yet to be proposed UN land equity laws are passed I will cling to it.

Due to non exiting of the bullet I'd tend to think it was a .22 rimfire. Someone once shot my car door while it was parked in a parking lot. The entry hole was much larger than you'd expect to see from a .22LR, but the bullet hadn't penetrated both door skins (had hit the bottom edge of the window) & I found the flattened bullet inside the door confirming the caliber.

Looks like a .338 with a 300 grain HP hand load down around 52 grains either H414 or H350 the barrel was about 26 inches with a 1:10 twist, cant tell if was a Ruger or a Remington

Sorry I couldn’t be of more help.

I would do like many others have said look the slug or what is left, and go from there.

Maybe 22MAG? Poachers choice weapon…or so I was told…on TV, yeah TV. :scrutiny:

well you all seem to have pristine land there ,Ive been on some pretty crappy land before, junk cars and so, if you ant told to pick up your shells, they just add color to the picture

I grew up in farm country. Hunting and shooting on dozens or likely hundreds of acres that we had available to us. Now I live in a small town and dont really know any of the local farmers, or property owners (I'm working on that). But that certainly doesnt give me the right to just go onto someones property and treat it like its mine. There are dozens of reasons why. One really good one is its PRIVATE PROPERTY.

Like was said earlier, I do plan to save up, buy some land and do with it as I please. We are all free to do that.

Excuse me?

I have nine grandkids, all of whom except the four very youngest have learned to shoot here. And they've all learned respect for the land here also. The four youngest will learn in due time (they're four and under).

I'm beginning to see why you have so much trouble getting permission to hunt private property.

Thats no 30-30. It would have ripped a hole clean through even at 100yds and I've got steel laying around to prove it too. Heres another bet on either a .25 handgun bullet or a .22LR/Magnum.

Camera data base turned up nothing, they may have done it at night. Pretty sure it must be a .22 or 9mm since it didn't pass through the other side. Other neighbors are having trouble and these people will be caught.

Found a half dozen 7mm Rem Mag cases along one of the fences...since we are a shotgun only state, looks like there's some poaching going on.
