Another 1 moose under the belt guy. I used a 30-06 with a 180 gr. and he died more or less where he stood with a single shot.

If you can quarter it, invest in a cordless Sawzall. My guide used a come along and custom spreader bar hung from a tree. We gutted, skinned then quartered.

Woohoo! I spent three summer's in Soldotna back in the early '90s. Beautiful area. I was working on a cleanup job at the oilfields in the Kenai NWR. Used to see moose almost every day on the back roads of the NWR, even saw one strolling down the street in town!

Man, I'd love to go back again.

Well, until you get that chance again, heres to making you 'homesick':

And the moose even come out to play in your sprinklers:

I've only shot one moose in my life,I was 14 and all I had was a very old Marlin
30/30 given to me by my Dad.It was 1500lbs with a 58"rack and I rememember it like it was yesterday. The 30/30 proved to be enough gun.

My niece took a very nice bull in Alberta with 7mm Rem Mag. I loaded them for her and my brother. She used 160 grain Accubonds over a healthy charge of RL 19. It worked exceptionally well.

The hard part comes after that, when you see how MUCH bigger they are than a lower 48 deer. So for moose, pack in as little as possible because you're going to be packing out a TON of meat.
A ton of meat? I don't know... My neighbor shot a big one, and it was only 3/4 of a ton!
;)

I'd use a .300 mag. Main reason for not going smaller is that I've had several close range encounters with moose that were quite aggressive. If need be, I'd want to be able to DROP him, not just annoy him until he dies...

The last time I got charged by a bull, the only thing I had on me was a pocket .22 pistol! I put a lot of thought into shot placement in those few seconds! Luckily he stopped about 6 feet away and just pawed the ground and snorted a lot. When I got higher up the trail, I looked back down and saw there was a cow and newborn calf in the brush right behind him. Then, while I was watching, a whole class of elementary school aged children ran right past him! He charged them too, but luckily it was just for show...

Ah yes, the famous Burger Bus, cousin to the Blue Bus in Anchor Point.
People use whatever they have for moose up here. Anything between .270 Win and .375HH is good and a few above that and a few below. I use a .303 or a .308. Most popular seems to be 30.06, .338 and .300 Win Mag.
