What can you use your suppressor for?

I am seriously considering picking up a suppressor as a Christmas gift to myself. I just don't know what I'd do with it. It's one of those "must haves." I'm probably going to get one for a rimfire as that's what I plink with mostly. Now that I'm reloading a little more that very well could change.

If I bought something like the Tac-65, could I use it on all my rimfires? Say 22LR, Mag, 17 HMR2 and HMR? I can see it being less effective for the HMRs.

You guys that have them, what do you use them for? Can you use them for shooting varmints or any kind of killing? Or is it just a target practice/plinking kind of thing?

According to their FAQ on the Tac-65, Tac Innovations doesn't rate it for anything other than .22 LR. You'll need a .22 Mag / .17 HMR rated suppressor. Zak Smith's company, Thunder Beast Arms makes one, and I'm sure others do as well.

That depends on your state's wildlife regulations. In many (most?) states you need a depredation or nuisance animal / crop destructive animal permit from Fish & Game / Wildlife Resources / Etc. to use a suppressor to kill an animal legally.

One of the best uses is to teach young shooters to shoot pistols and high power rifles quietly and with a little less recoil. In my state varmits are OK too but not game animals, mostly hogs for me.

I looked into it, apparently hunting any nongame animal in Tx with a silencer is legal. That'd include pigs and the occasional coyote. That alone is good enough reason for me. I still would like to start with a rimfire can I think. I shoot a lot of rimfire, be nice to get away without having to wear hearing protection.

Will the ones rated for a 22 mag still be fairly quiet for a 22LR? How are they are on the 17s?

Like to get the best bang for my buck.

Gdbyrd,

You're correct. In Texas, you can hunt rabbits @ night w/ a spotlight from a silenced belt-fed water-cooled machinegun. But not squirrels - that's a game animal that you can't even use a pellet gun on. Hogs - pest. Deer - game animal.

I've gone hunting for hogs @ night w/ NVGs. So they turned up the next day in the backyard around noon.

Consider a mulit-purpose can. The Liberty Mystic, while not cheap, is a nice "One size fits most" type of can.

It can be used for the following calibers:
22 Hornet
22 K Hornet
218 Bee
223 REM - 16" BBL
30 PPC - Subsonic
30 Carbine
32-20
357 MAG
221 Fireball
32 S&W Long
32 H&R Magnum
380
9X18
9X19 (Base Caliber)
38 Super
38 Special
38 S&W
357 Max - Subsonic
338 Spectre
300 BLK
300 Whisper
300/221
308 Win- Subsonic

Suppressor is nice to have if you want to shoot outdoors without earmuffs, even if it is just paper punching.

Silencerco has one that's good for 22, 22mag, 17Hmr and 5.7....I think its the Sparrow IIRC. I shot a AR SBR 5.7 through it, I think its next on my list for $400ish

Huntertown Arms also makes a multi purpose .22 caliber suppressor. It's not a monocore, but it won't have the FRP that the sparrow has either, I'm willing to bet. It's also a bit cheaper cost wise than the Sparrow.

Shooting steel plates suppressed without hearing protection I feel like a Vampire walking in the sun :)

Removing suppressors from the NFA hassle would be a major boon to the shooting sports IMHO. Also, without the NFA hassles we'd surely see some awesome integrated designs.

How about to put a daisy into?:uhoh:

Oh, on second thought, you mean NOISE suppressor, not Flash suppressor.

Oh well, the daisy will still work.

Unfortunately, unless your paperwork has been in the pipeline for a couple of months already, I'm afraid you'll be having a late Xmas present. Mine from June are still not back yet :(

Its funny you say that because - I was looking for a rimfire can. I read and read and read and finally came to the conclusion the the SWR Spectre is the ultimate rimfire can. It is made from stainless steel (so it is dipable), it is full auto rated, and it is rated all the way up through 5.7 so I ordered one. When it got to my dealer's place, I sold it to him because I had already decided I'd rather have a Liberty Mystic. All the great things of the Spectre plus the ability to use it on 9mm and even 223 if yer barrel is atleast 16" and u shoot slow. The only downside being its a little bigger than a dedicated rimmy would be. I can live with that.

Even if u don't go with a Liberty Mystic, consider the following: can u use the "dip" to clean it? Is it user serviceable? Rated for what calibers in what barrel lengths? And is it rated for full auto?

BTW I'm not sure but I wanna say the Tac65 threads into the end cap and there are better/stronger methods.
