Found these 9mm Luger cases at the range on Friday. Any idea what would cause these cases to look like this? I've seen bulges at the other end of the case but never like this towards the mouth.

Happy 4th to all in the USA!

Thanks.

Enlarged pistol cases don't really worry me too much...oddly shaped rifle cases are definitely cause for concern though.

I imagine the 9mm Bullets did not realize their full FPS potential in that situation.

Lol...

You'll find .22 Long Rifle fired in .22 Magnum chambers, .380's fired in 9mm chambers, 9mm fired in .40 chambers, .40's fired in .45 chambers, 357 Sig fired in .40 chambers, etc. If it will fit, someone will do it.

Some people evidently have problems with putting the proper ammunition in the proper firearm. I keep examples of these I've pick up off the range for showing to students in handgun safety classes.

Hope this helps.

Fred

A friend of mine and I go to the hot spots where people shoot and we pick up brass all the time. I found some 9mm in a pile of .40's that looked just like the ones on the left.

I bet they felt frustrated when trying charge the .40's Magazine with .45 ACP, so some sort of consolation was in order.

A certain amount of careless ignorance caused the first. Don't think it was a mistake. Wonder if the shooter got a group on the target. Ed.

Good idea Fred, and I have a story to go along with it. A close friend of mine works at a gun shop/shooting range. One of their rental guns is an XD40. A new shooter come to the range to do some shooting and rented the 40 caliber. The boss rang up the customer and sent him back to the range with a box of ammunition...

A few minutes and several shots later, the cutomer coes back out and asked for some help with the gun: for some reason, the bullets were all over the target, and he just couldn't get the gun to shoot a group. On closer inspection, the range ower realized he had given the man 9mm to shoot in the 40.

The gun was feeding, firing, and ejecting the WRONG ammunition. I saw the casings after the fact, and they looked exactly like those in the first picture.

I am surprised that you would find very many in one place like that. I would hope that most of the time it ends up being a mistake instead of shooting them on purpose. I have a friend that has two Walther P99's, one in 9mm and one in 40. He loaded all the mag's for both guns and set them on the table. He didn't realize the 9mm mag's would fit in the 40. Well you know where this is going. The first shot fired locked the slide up tight. We finally got it cleared and saw the problem and changed to the correct ammo.
