I was surprised to read, "The ruling was celebrated in gun shops, by gun-rights advocates, and elected officials who support greater freedoms for gun owners. The White House embraced the decision even though it went farther than the Bush administration had wanted. "

What has been the Bush Administration stand on gun controls ? Will McCain follow suit ?

Dick Cheney is pro-2nd, GW I can only say has not been quiet as supportive...............

I caught that also.

There's no support shown for that conclusion. I think the CBS writer just made it up to juice up the story a bit.

If memory servers correctly the Bush Administration filed an amicus brief with the court asking them to uphold the DC law.

I was pretty sure that I recall reading the same thing that Kentucky mentioned in these forums.

It was Dick Cheney who broke ranks with the current Administration and filed in support of the 2A.

Kentucky was right, i remember reading the stink about Bush's attorney general and the justice department backing DC on this and how bitter we all were over it.

The Solictor General (a Bush administration apointee whose job is to defend Federal laws in court), filed a brief agreeing that the Second Amendment is an individual right; but asking the Supreme Court to reverse and remand the decision to the lower court on the issue of whether it was a reasonable restriction.

This irritated many in the administration (including Vice-President Cheney who joined a majority of Senators and House members in filing a brief advocating a stricter interpretation of an individual right than the one listed in the Solicitor General's brief).

GW I can only say has not been quiet as supportive....

GWB isn't in the same class as Cheney for support; but we sure would not be celebrating today if there had been a Gore or Kerry in office for either of the last two terms.

Its the job of the solicitor general to defend US laws in the court regardless of whether they approve of them or not.

What the SG's brief asked for in essence was that the case be sent back to the lower court to deal with the idea of what level of scrutiny should be involved.

It would have been nice if the SC decision had indeed sent the case back but only on the issue of scrutiny. It is one more thing that needs to be hashed out.

Some believe GWB would have signed an extension to the AWB. No one can really say for sure scince congress made no effort to renew it.

My personal oppinion : It seems as tho, indirectly, he (GWB) has had great effect in regards to the Second Ammendment; which is why I am now mulling over voting for McCain. Something that I had not considered before.

2 more SCJ's will probably be replaced during the next President's administration. I dont want BHO appointing those two Justices. Especially considering the fact that Heller was decided by such a close margin.

During a debate with Kerry on 2004 a person asked him about the AWB expiring and his answer was if they send another bill I'll sign it.
