Some things I've learned....

A dirty gun will only get dirtier. :uhoh:
Keep firearms clean. Check them often and do function checks before any duty or CCW use.
A smaller gun is harder to shoot & handle than a larger gun.
I learned that lesson with my new M&P Shield 9mm. Be safe and watch the muzzle. Larger guns and pistols still require diligent carry but the parts are bigger.
Over-penetration is over-rated. This is a common topic on many gun/tactical forums. It could be a serious problem with guns 30/40 years ago, but in 2015 it's not as big a issue with most common handgun calibers & ammunition as in the past. A .44magnum or .50AE may still be excessive but I wouldn't expect a .38spl or .40 JHP to zip clean thru a avg person's torso.
Finally, muscle memory is a real mo-fo!
If you move your gear or weapons around you'll not have them in a hurry.
I went to grab my extra magazine yesterday then realized it was in another pocket.
Practice drawing or using defense items & keep them in the same place all the time.

Overpenetration is also 100% guaranteed if you miss. Rule #2 trumps ammo selection.

Since the days of my first BB gun, I've learned:
1. Be careful how many friends you invite to go shooting.
They will rarely help clean the guns.
Or supply their own ammo.

2. The way to shoot a double action revolver is quite different than for a single action revolver.

3. The way to shoot an auto loading pistol is quite different than for a revolver.

1. You can never have too much professional training.

2. I prefer to carry a DA/SA over Striker fired.

3. A purpose built belt is invaluable.

4. I no longer care what you carry or the FBI carries or what local law enforcement carries. That goes for brand, model and caliber. I'm capable of making my own decisions.
