I do shooting sports ‘stuff’ with a local Boy Scout camp. I’m more of a rifle guy rather than a shotgun gun guy. From time to time we have smaller scouts that our 20 ga shotguns (rem 870 youth) kick pretty good. We hate to see these guys not able to shoot with their troops.

We’ve talked about buying a decent .410 shotgun, realizing it’s harder for them to hit with .410 but they’d still be able to participate. I came across these.

Does anyone have experience with them?

TIA

No, but have used the old Savage 410ers for years in single, double and overunder 12 gauge for years with good results. Best with extractors rather than electors, however. Pretty good patterns with the 3/4 ounce loads. Have to find them on auction sites as they were discontinued long ago. I am carefully "hoarding" my three.

Yes, they are a PITA as you need to poke the empty out of them every time. For a few shots for grins and giggles, they'll do somewhat OK. But if you are serious about shooting subgauges in a larger bore, there are much better alternatives.

Gas semi auto maybe? The difference in cost buying a used 20 gauge 1100 - and nothing shoots softer - will soon be saved in shells; 20 vs. .410 or 28. If you reload, load some mouse fart loads.

thanks all

reloads are a no go for boy scouts we're not even supposed to buy remanufactured shotshells

good info on poking shells - we're looking at one scout in maybe 25 needing this

we do have an 1187 youth and it seems to kick them just as hard as the 870 - i suspect its a lot to do with fit

it may all be irrelevant - the little skeeters - since we'll be putting shells into a shotgun that don't match whats stamped on the barrel ... :banghead:

As long as he is supervised, that should not be an issue. I have those skeeters for 12 to 28 and 20 to 28. I eventually bought some 28 gauge guns; then discovered reloading my 12 and 20 down to 28 level with 3/4 oz of shot. No more 28s.......

IIRC, someone makes light loads in 20 for training; I know they do in 12 as well.

Couple things:

It says multiple times "Target loads only"... might not matter to you in your situation though.

I should think that to not be incredibly interruptive to shooting, a fella would want 4-6 per double - 2-3 per single and the prices are kinda high for that.

Will the users get a "short bus" stigmatism for using them?

Is there a derogatory effect to the initial training of the shooter in that another element/consideration is introduced into the steps involved in safe operation of the firearm? These will have to be treated more delicately that standard cast-off hulls.

Some kids, no matter how sad it makes us, just can't reach the pedals... yet.

Todd.
