What do women want?

I don't know what "women" want. But I know what this woman wants. I want a comfortable holster which really fits my gun and fits my body.

After looking at all the holsters I could find on the web or in friends' holster boxes, and having tried on dozens of designs, I could almost design one for myself. The holster I want would be a fleece-backed kydex holster. It has to have a slight muzzle-forward cant and it has to be tuckable. If the cant is adjustable, that would be a big plus.

Tuckable holsters leave a loop visible on the belt. I want my holster to be made of kydex, because kydex is thinner and faster to draw from, and easier to care for. But that loop -- I want it covered in leather. Not just any leather, either. I want it to be covered with the exact same leather as my belt, and I want a pretty design stamped on it.

The belt has to be super-stiff and have a pretty buckle. Some decorative stamping would be a nice plus.

My gun is an oddball now, with a no-longer-produced CT laser giving it an unusual extra bulge. So the holster would have to be custom-fitted to this particular gun.

It isn't hard to find custom leather holster makers. My friend Chris Cunningham does beautiful leatherwork, and she has plenty of competition.

But does anyone do truly custom kydex/leather blends?

Well, it's your fault I started daydreaming. :) (Seriously!)

The closest I've found to true custom is Mark at Mach2Tactical.
I can't swear he'll be able to do what you need, but it's certainly worth an email and/or phone call.

I always use Comp-tac stuff, and know alot of people put a piece of Agrip on the back for comfort. That may be another option.

Hope that helps.

Pax,
You might contact Patricia of SideArmor (she's also a mod at GlockTalk I believe) and ask her about building a custom kydex holster to fit both body and gun. Don't know about fleece lined, but cant adjustable is a can do...

You are sooooo right. Double pouch, tuckable, and padded. Decorative loop design.

Shucks!!!

Pax--DURN!! Reading down the titles of the threads, I thought that here, finally, we had an authoritative answer to ol' Siggie Freud's question!

Hope ya get yr Kydex/leather holster/belt, anyhow. Good luck.

And if you DO ever develop an answer to that larger question, well..... :D

Personally, I'd like a small vanilla ice cream cone and a new gun. I'm not sure what gun I want, though. I'm considering a Sig P239 but would really like something with larger capacity magazines. Decisions, decisions.

Granted I am a male, I have assisted ladies, and kids.

pax is not only addressing needs for ladies, also guys. I have shared with pax in private, still I am serious, so many guys will ask a lady about firearm gear. Seriously.

Ladies, communicate. I have learned a LOT from ladies and kids.

Black. Does anything come in Cordovan? I like cordovan for instance. Well phooey, there is some cordovan, but why can they not make Speedloader pouch in something besides Black, put slits in it, AND make a paddle one?

Being the comfy hetro male I am , I do not care if the durn thing read "Barbara's Secret" on the darn thing - hey there is a great name for ladies firearm gear company, huh? Like the pun? :) - I'd use a one of these speedloaders with a Model 65 Ladysmith. One of the best CCW and all around guns is that Ladysmith with a 3" bbl...I have carried one, and have NO qualms as male doing so.

Slits. Fashion designers can put slits on ladies outfits to plumb up to the armpit and show cleveage down to belly-button.

Would it be too much to ask a holster maker to put slits on holsters, mag / speedloaders and such, that are lower, thus allowing the gear, mags, loaders to ride higher due the hips on a lady? Puh-Leeze!

How about paddle holsters with the same considerations?

Surely to goodness there has to be "adjustable" cows and horses, and Kydex critters, this stuff can come from that is...Adjustable? Yes,say a Lady wants to wear husbands holster and gun, use the adjustable thing-ma-jig so slit is lower and gun rides higher.

Maybe "try before you buy" - or is there a conspiracy that everyone is supposed to have a discarded holster drawer ?

NAA , put the durn lanyard ring on the durn Mini Revolvers from the factory. I mean the ladies get these things, it is "cute" and then "Cuteness" has to go back to factory.
Put in on from get-go. I got an idea, make it where one can remove it if want. I am a guy, I don't want to send something in to have something put on...give me the option to remove something...
May come to a shock to some, but if a lady can can take off a bra from under a shirt, she can darn well remove a laynard ring all by herself.

Black. What is the deal? This ain't Model Ts where you "have a choice of black or black".

Speed strips. Humor me speed strips folks, just make some in Green [ I like green] , pink, yellow, red, and Reese's Pieces blue.

STI can make a racegun in yellow, pink and whatever...
Every seen a mag extension in anything but black...
Granted I am a guy, and therefore by default I have no fashion sense...just maybe, a lady does not want a black mag extension, she wants a blue one, or a gray one or ...

Maybe she and hubby use the guns for CCW, keeps mags straight. Umm maybe same platform, different calibers...be nice to grab a spare mag in 9mm with a teal green mag extension instead of hubby's .40 cal...

One more thing...personal pet peeve of mine, and that of others and ladies.

Gun shops need to keep soap and washcloth handy for ladies to use.
Forget cleaning hands, this to wash out the gun shop guys mouth when he says

"Little lady needs a little gun".

Still think a tube of KY on the counter is a good idea when these knuckleheads drag out the wittle shiny gun with pink grips to show a lady what she needs...

Instead I decided to behave myself. ;)

Pax, if there's a need and its not being filled, then you should fill it. Start a company catering to the firearms needs of women.

Mike Sastre at River City Sheaths will make anything you want him to make out of kydex/concealex. As to the leather, you might just want to get the holster to mount using leather snaps so that whenever you get a belt made you can get a couple of loops made up of the same leather with snaps to go to the holster.

sm observed (among other things):

"Maybe she and hubby use the guns for CCW, keeps mags straight. Umm maybe same platform, different calibers...be nice to grab a spare mag in 9mm with a teal green mag extension instead of hubby's .40 cal..."

My wife has an HK P2000 in .40 cal, while I prefer my HK USPC in .40 cal. Mags are interchangeable between the two. She only uses the 10 rd mags, while I only use the 12 rd mags. In order to manage our respective piles of mags, I had to paint the floorplates different colors ... so, I can personally get behind the idea of colored floorplates/extensions.

Pax,

You are a respected firearms trainer specializing in training women. In other words, you have what we used to refer to as stroke, meaning you have the credentials to back your name. With that in mind, why not approach a few of the companies about working together to design real holsters for women's needs. I imagine the companies wouldn't mind the thought of having a respected trainer and writer advocating for their brand, and you would get what you want, plus naming rights.

You have the ideas in your mind, you just need an artisan to take the ideas and convert them to working models for T&E, then to refine the design based on your T&E. Give it a shot. The worst they could do is say no.
