What do you do with your lanyard hole?

On a carry knife, pocket knife and larger fixed blades, would you make a lanyard to go through the hole? I'm having an itch to make some.

If you feel a lanyard is good, what purpose do you use it for, and what type of knots are you using?

I think it's pretty good for a utility FB or a small (<4" handle/scales) folder, but for good SD knives I think it's not going to improve speed. I do have a knife with a slender distal portion of the scales, which also has a low rider type clip, and I use a sebenza type lanyard on it which improves draw and lets me draw it with gloves on, but I think it's a knife by knife decision.

On small FBs and folders and utility knives it makes longer use (like carving, chopping, and hard use especially) more comfortable if you allow the lanyard to double over, and it of course can make the knife easier to grab/hold onto if you were, say, on a boat or in a moving vehicle.

I think larger knives suitable for SD do not need them, by definition. It adds an unnecessary portion to such knives which should already be easy to deploy and retain.

Make a lanyard for it....

Here is a step by step method of creating a paracord lanyard. I know a few of the pics are a little out of focus but you can still easily follow the step involved. Edited with clearer pictures.

1. Materials...Here I am using contrasting color to make it easier to follow the knots. You can use 1 or 2 colors...just personal preference. Here the green is32 inches and the orange is 28. The difference is because the green is making the loop and extra length is used. Also you will need a lighter to seal the ends and a bead or clip to hold the loop. Binder clips work well. Cut and gut the paracord removing all inside strands and seal the ends.

2. If you use a bead use one of the interior strands to pull the loop through the bead.

If you use a binder clip just clip it on at the length you want the loop to be.

3. first step in tying

4. next

7. carefully pull knot tight, it should en up looking like this. You may have to work the knot a bit to form the square. pull till it looks about like the pic.

8. next knot is basically the same start with the vertical (north/south) strands

lane.jpg

9. next run the horizontal (east/west) strands through

step11.jpg

10. pull tight, I normally just tug in opposite directions till the knot is tight. Make sure this knot is as tight as possible. Repeat and the pattern will start showing

step12.jpg

11. Keep repeating till you run out of cord or you reach the desired length. When you reach the length you want snip a strand to about 1/4 inch and melt...don't burn just slowly melt it. Once melted I use the top of the lighter to smear it gently.

step13.jpg

step14.jpg

12. you can cut an melt 2 of the strands and leave a tail or do all 4...it's up to you...

step15.jpg

If you don't use a bead the top will look like this...of course you can always add a bead later using the method in step 2.

step16.jpg

Beads or not, tails or not...make your lanyard the way you want it. I use quite a few colors to match the scale colors and use different lengths, even will add in a mini pry bar sometimes. Have fun with it and use them. I leave the lanyard hanging out of my pocket to make getting that knife out easier rather than having to reach in and dig it out. Works for cell phones, and keys as well.

Some lanyards are pretty cool - I like leather ones myself. I put lanyard holes in all of my knives so I could hang them on a nail between stages of building - have no idea if anyone uses lanyards in them.

Gotta agree with Valkman, on custom knives Leather Lannies are the way to go.
I do see 550 having its lace for some applications though. :)

Of course you are not limited to the square braids. You can do flat, round, 5-6-7 plaits, whatever you can dream up. Beads on top, on bottom, beads of different materials. The knife on the left has a bottom bead with a tritium rod inserted...handy for finding a dropped knife at night. And once you learn the flat method then bracelets are easy.

WHen I was in the Infantry many of us used lanyards on things like our demo kit knifes (please let's not start the no such thing as arguements , we called them that and mine was ISSUED to me at Vilsek Demo school where the instructors called them that and they were part of the standard demo kit whether they were called pocket knifes or not).

Typically we just used a boot lace that was shoved in the pocket with the pocket knife and tied to the nerest belt loop and belt.

We also did this with other loseable bits of equipment.

We called them "Dummy Cords" as in "Don't loose that, Dummy"

WHen camping or scouting I still use one on one knife as I am no Dummy that is going to have no knife because it was lost or "Borrowed".

451, Thanks for the pics! On your second post's picture, the one on the left, is that a cobra knot? I believe that was the one I liked the best. There were people I've seen put 12 feet of paracord on these things.

I'm not sure yet about the bead. I want one, but don't want it scratching the knife. I know, dumb worry to have, but I don't carry my keys in the same pocket as my knife.

For the life of me I couldn't tell you the names of the knots I use in making lanyards...lol...I just make them. I do like the flat braid myself. As far as beads...they don't have to be metal. I have used carved wood, bone, elk teeth, the possibilities are about unlimited.

I'm heading to a bead store today, and will look for a wood one, as I doubt it would be able to scratch the knife.

One big question. I want a quick release, and not using a metal clasp or keychain ring. How did you attach the black and orange one to the knife on your last picture in your first batch of photos?

Here is a skull carved from some kind of nut...just google skull beads online...you will find all kinds or just google carved beads...

Almost all of my lanyards are just looped through themselves, either through the lanyard hole or bale...like the last pic in my tutorial

You want Skull Beads? I just had these Cast out of 99.9% Sterling Silver.

Ok, give me a lead here

Eric, I love those, but would rather wood vs. metal. If you have those in wood please let me know and I'd order.

If anyone has a lead on wood skull beads with 4mm holes please let me know. I did a long search, and couldn't find much.

Dang, you guys are handy!

I don't keep a lanyard on most of my knives, but on the one that I keep in the truck for outdoor use, and the one in my Survival Bag that lives in my flightbag both have lanyards on them. Nothing fancy though, just some 550 cord with a square knot.

I don't mind a lanyard, I just don't use them when I'm casually flipping out a knife for a quick task, which is 99% of my knife usage, so I don't keep them on most of my knives. The certainly have their place though!

I leave the lanyard hanging out of my pocket to make getting that knife out easier rather than having to reach in and dig it out.

Thank you, 451. What you said made sense. I got out some 550 cord and make one just this evening for my regular pocket carry.

Yo Mama...I'll ask my carver guy. What kinda wood do you prefer? I bet he coul carve skulls liek that out of almost any wood he can find. :)

Well now Eric, that's a great question! I imagine a hard wood, without much experience in cost and types of wood, I'd want something affordable, but yet exotic :). I know those normally don't go together, but if you have a combo that you think would work let me know.

This guy does amazing things with knife lanyards.

They claim to be the world's biggest bead store, and having been to their retail shop, which is the size of a WalMart, I don't doubt it.

I tend to put them on all my knives, partly because I like knots. Once you get used to the security and the ease of finding them in your pocket, a knife won't feel right without it.

Tie my house key to it so I can wear both the knife with the key around my neck so as to not lose them.
