I just got my first rifle, a Savage MKII, and I plan to do a lot of plinking and small game hunting with it. What do you guys feed yours? Any general tips for ownership of this gun? Thanks.

Congrats on your first rifle, you picked a nice one. As to the ammo, go out and buy a box of everything you can find, and try if off of a bench to see which one it likes the best. 22's sometimes tend to be picky, however, I suspect that HB Savage will shoot pretty good with anything. ;)

Keep the action clean, just brush it out every once in a while...or don't ever clean it...or clean it occasionally...or spray it with Rem Oil when the planets align...or...Sorry, just summarizing the threads on care and cleaning of .22's. There's a HUGE diversity of opinion; do a search and be prepared to learn, unlearn, and learn again more than you could have imagined.

You're primary job is to get out and shoot it!!! Don't soak it in the creek, give it a little oil occasionally, and it'll be fine.

Have fun,

I bought a Savage MKII GL back in the spring. BTW The GL is because it has a left handed bolt.

I normally shoot Remington Golden Bullets. They come in a 550 pack and are less then $12 from WallyWorld. I tried these in that rifle and had a hard time getting an entire mag to cycle through the rifle. I also keep CCI Mini Mags on hand so I tried these. Same thing happened, feeding was iffy as I cycled the bolt. The CCI definitely worked better than the Remington. Then I picked up a box of Federal in a 550 value pack. WalMart has these at less than $10. These Federals are copper washed I believe, not just plain lead. Well they feed great, no problems what so ever in over 500 rounds.

So the moral to the story is, buy the Federal copper washed in the 550 pack.
I am not buying the Remington Gold Bullets anymore.

As for cleaning it. I generally clean all guns after shooting them, the MkII as well.
It really does not get very dirty using the Federal rounds. I still pull the bolt and wipe the face a little and I also run a patch through the barrel. But really it is not all that dirty even after a couple hundred rounds.

Enjoy shooting it, mine is a lot of fun.

I've tried a bunch of different stuff in mine and pretty much just stick to Aguila target ammo . I shoot spent 7.62x39 casings at 50 yds all day with that ammo . Most of the other stuff just doesn't seem to be as accurate in MY savage . YMMV .

In my savage MkII I mainly shoot federal champion target 40gn lead (formerly federal lightening i believe)and federal bulk pack copper coated 36gn hollowpoints. I havent had a problem with them and they group pretty good.

I just got mine and have not shot more than 100rnds yet.
so far mostly rem thunderbolt which it shoots and feeds well.
i have also shot some aguila hyper velocity which shoot well, but the rifle seems to have trouble extracting them.

I have a Mark IIGL in which I normally shoot CCI Subsonic HPs. These are pretty waxy, so I need to clean the chamber after a box or two so that it'll extract live rounds (no problems so far with empties). I clean the chamber with a Q-tip with some gun oil on it, then swab it with the dry end so it's not oily. Takes all of 30 seconds.

I just bought a federal bulk pack of 550 at walmart... $9.99!!! woah! I new 22LRs were cheap but I had no idea how cheap.

When I first got mine I had some thunderbolts and some Remington Golden some CCI Stingers and some Federal. It would not give groups worth a hoot switched to Aguila target ammo. Am very pleased with its groups now.
