What do you guys think this means for Oregon gun owners?

Sport

Stickjockey...Well said, lad.

Not long after the "Assault Weapons Ban" travesty...including a promise that this wouldn't affect "Sporting Arms" or guns with "Legitimate Sporting Purpose"...I shook my head and said out loud that it wouldn't be six months before they came after other types of firearms. It wasn't more than a week before I caught a late-night segment on C-Span...I'm thinkin' that it was Janet Reno, but I could be mistaken...holding up a scoped Remington Sendero and panning it 180 degrees while brashly announcing that:
"America...does_not_need_ SNIPER RIFLES!" (Emphasis hers.)

Now, pardon the hell right outta me, but what is a Remington Sendero if not a sporting rifle?

So...whenever I hear someone spouting the tired phrase: "I support the right of Americans to keep and bear arms as long as they have a legitimate sporting purpose!" I have to assume that I'm either listening to a traitor or to an idiot...or both.

Whoever tries, plans, or even wishes to disarm us is our mortal enemy, by their own decree.

Got it?;)

Liberal, not libertine

If a gun owners caucus were formed that wasn't sincere in promoting 2nd Amendment rights, it would do more harm than good. I know that. Education of Democrats who are afraid of guns because they have no experience with them is one strategy I think will be effective in de-mystifying firearms. If someone doesn't know the difference between a revolver and a semi-automatic handgun, it's hard to explain to them why both serve the same function. Be friendly, be informed, be informative. It's a simple strategy that relies on face-to-face meetings to show "the other" that we aren't scary.

And on that score; I'm a liberal, not a libertine drug-using, free-love, tree-spiker as someone implied (I assume jokingly?) The gun-owning Portland liberals I was referring to are family types with fulltime jobs and mortgages who volunteer in their kids' schools. They may disagree with conservative gun owners about the scope of government's role in society and they probably drive more hybrid cars. But they also know that the Second Amendment (and the rest of the Constitution) means what it says and shouldn't be messed with. As they say, politics makes strange bedfellows; and gun owners across party lines are natural allies who hopefully realize that fact.

Sage, you sound sincere in your desire to educate your fellow Democrats about guns and the Second Amendment. So good luck to you. I hope your efforts don't end up getting used as a legitimization tool by the "sporting purpose" crowd. That's obviously not your intent.

You might want to explain the history of the term "militia" at your talks as a way of emphasizing the fact that the Constitution does not say, "a well regulated duck hunting season being necessary to the feeding and entertainment of a fat and happy State, the right of the people to keep and bear sporting Arms shall be manipulated and managed in a manner that would generate violent unrest if applied to speech, religion, or assembly."

It can't be sporting, its black. :p

Don't forget Ted Kennedy pushed a bill to outlaw "cop killer" bullets and specifically listed .30-30 as evil cop killing armor piercing ammunition.

Hell, it don't get more PC and "sporting" than old cowboy lever action rifles.

I don't think it's posturing. When I looked over the ratings for candidates at the GOA site in the last presidential election, I noticed the further west you go in the nation (until you get to California) the more there are Democrat candidates who get high ratings for guns.

I'm a liberal,

... is fundamentally inconsistant with ...

... the Second Amendment (and the rest of the Constitution) means what it says and shouldn't be messed with.

...for the simple reason that the liberal agenda has been deliberately advanced by Consitutional ammendmant via judicial fiat (since it can't be advanced by legislation)- and ammendmant by judicial fiat is NOT consitant with what the Constitution says.

what a nice stereotypic generalization

Well Third Rail, we are talking about Portland, Oregon. Ever been there or are you just making defensive assumptions for yourself? Unfortunately my statement was based on practical experience.

My vehicle broke down in Portland, Oregon one Sunday afternoon. The only people I met during my roadside repairs were admitted drug addicts (heroin) and people carrying six-packs of beer (Budweiser) in paper bags. They flocked to me like a pack of buzzards. The twenty minute repair job took an hour and a half because I was condition orange and being continually distracted by their crime stories.

I've travelled a lot and Portland is one of the very few places where I can honestly say I was relieved to be back on my way NEVER TO RETURN to that cesspool of humanity. If that's a stereotypical generalization I can live with that. :D

Cesspool of humanity

Ryder,
Your story seemed plausible until the "Bud" reference. They were drinking Bud? In the microbrew capital of America? Not sure what part of town you where in, but these seem like fellow tourists.

Just as well. The endless rain drives strong men out of their minds. To escape, they'll hide under Douglas Fir trees, only to find them full of squirrels defecating from the branches. At this, they run deeper into the woods, where they are set-upon by hordes of banana slugs. The result is not pretty.

As C96 pointed out, I failed to mention the giant mutant possums. And if you think the runoff from the Hanford Nuclear Reservation does strange things to the possums, you don't want to think about what it does to the fish in the Columbia River and to the sea lions that eat them. Just something to keep in mind if you had a mind to go swimming on Sun Day (the one day a year that it doesn't rain - usually a Wednesday in August).

Those of a perverse bent like to go down to the river bank and place bets on whether a particular small child will be eaten by a giant mutant sturgeon or a giant mutant sea lion. All bets are off if a sturgeon attacks a sea lion or vice versa.

Good for them! This whole issue should be a non-issue. There should be no difference between the two parties on this.
