@Paul R Zartman, good job on evicting the marsupial. Hope she gathered all her baggage.;)

@27hand, pays to be picky; nice trade. Unique non-typical buck! I've only ever seen one with double main beam and that was at some distance on a foggy morning. Hunted the area regularly hoping for a better picture, but never saw it again.

@Armored farmer, very nice frontstuffer and congratulations on the jake with it.

I hunted every dove season with mine, which was a high school graduation gift from my part time boss and my gunsmith friend & mentor, who "helped" me restore the old gun which, as best as we could determine, according to proof marks was about 100 years old in 1954. Actually, I helped him other than scrubbing ant nests out of barrels, restoring the stock and a few other "unskilled" tasks such as making a replacement for the missing ram rod, & turning new nipples on the lathe, but sure was a great learning experience. Proofed it by tying to an old tire and tripping triggers with long string on a full 12 ga. fired 2 3/4" of ffg behind a double charge of shot in each barrel. Seemed like a lifetime before smoke cleared enough to see if it survived ea. shot.

hps

Wish I had some private property to go look out for mushrooms, we can't pick anything on state land. I do want to call a owner of a old farm to see if I can turkey hunt, maybe there will be some if I can get in there.

Hps1 that foggy picture really reminds me of two bucks I seen one morning bow hunting, I would see them every day but never where I could shoot them, last time I seen the was early bow on that foggy morning in high grass much like your odd nontipical buck. By the they were about 5 1/2 years old, they were like twins. They were a beautiful pair of 10 pointers.

My "camera-loving dog" was barking in the yard one morning. I found momma and her brood. One tried to get adopted.

How do you like the tenpoint crossbox.
I love them but dont have any experience beyond them.
I had a 10 point Invader (330fps) that had limbs delaminate in the middle of archery season and with a 2 to 3 week turnaround to replace them, I bought the Stealth FX4 and like it even more at 370fps but had to go carbon from aluminum.

All but one deer had complete pass throughs. I use Spitfire 100gr 3 blade heads.

The one was my fault at a frontal quartering shot.

I'll hit a 6 inch circle at 50 offhand regularly with the FX4 although my backyard hunt area is limited to about 25 yards.

The invader at 40, the same.

Those 3 buck were shot at 12 and 15yds.
The garbage truck spooked the first 8 point.
The 9 point had head down sniffing the ground in second week of rifle season.
The 14 point non typical just came in to the exact spot of the first pic which is 15 yds.

I dont think I'd spend the 2500 on their best model but just use a discharge bag since you cant decock them ( in that price range).

I broke a quiver bracket (my fault ). They sent a new one NC

From what I've read and Hurd there good, I'd like to get one but just don't have the money to put out, maybe I can find a used one some day. Plus are season to use them is only 15 days.

The only snakes I worry about are copper heads, I've seen the go out off there way to attack someone. I killed one in Alabama during a fishing derby, that was over 7'.

A 3' Copperhead is a big Copperhead. I'm betting you killed a Brown Water Snake. They can get that big and do look a lot like a Copperhead. We have them here and they aren't that bad. The bite can be painful, but it would be near impossible for one to kill a healthy adult. Maybe a child, or someone with other health issues. I've known of people being bitten that never went to the hospital. After a few days the swelling and pain went away.

I've ran across a few rattlesnakes in the mountains north of here, but none near my house. We did have an older gentleman bitten by one and died 3-4 years ago.

My 2 oldest grandkids. They spent the night with us on Friday night before archery opener a few years back. They looked up at the bear skin hanging on the wall and asked me to take them bear hunting. So I did. Made a late night run to Walmart for camo shirts and they went with me the next morning. We didn't get more than 75-100 yards from the truck. They did fine until they ran out of Skittles and Dr. Pepper. Then couldn't sit still.

It's looked like a copper head right color and had the triangle shape on the body. There was even a forest ranger there that said it was the biggest he ever seen. My dad ran over a big milk shake one time, had to remove the rear wheels to get it out.

That goose looks like it's a pet lol.

Yes, halfway between Bandera and Kerrville, about five miles from Camp Verde.
Stay safe.

Man, @Riomouse, I feel for you. Leaving the Hill Country of Texas (The Whole Other Country) 36995700462_183661feb7_o.jpg and going to CA.;):D :D;)
There was some pretty scenery in CA last time I was there around 1946, but too crowded to suit me today, though.

Have several good friends in Center Point and Kerrville area.

Nice pics jmr, the Smokies are beautiful. I salute your courage taking two grand kids that age hunting, unassisted. They can sure be hard to keep corraled on a 2:1 basis. Love the look on grand daughter's face.

hps

That looks like a great hunt. Where do you find that many doves?

These were shot by a friend and I on a 2 acre millet field in my back pasture. The limit is 15/day/person.
If we get rain starting the 4th of July, I can plant a browntop millet field and have it ready before our late September opener. If no rain then no doves. :(

I didn't know they had stocked elk in the park. When did it start?

I couldn't remember and had to look it up. The released the 1st ones in 2001. They are all on the NC side of the park for now. This big boy was photographed in Cataloochee Valley. It is on the very north eastern tip of the park in an area not visited as much.

They have migrated near Cheorkee NC and can often be seen there too. Some wear tracking collars, some don't.

My old high school buddy had sowed sunflowers at just the right time. They were ripe on August 27th, and he Bush-hogged them down. The doves were in a feeding frenzy. He knew that the season opener on September 1 was going to be a massacre. He hosted an invitation only .410 shoot on his 5 or 6 acre patch. It was phenomenal. The doves were literally trying to land on our gun barrels.

@MaxP, nice pix! What area of TX did you find the water buffalo in?

This time of year was one of my favorite times to tromp around the ranches and see all the new arrivals.

Came upon this newborn Scimitar calf very shortly after it was born in some waist high grass. Momma was coaxing it into to brush to safety while I patiently waited for them to depart.

Cool photo my daughter snapped of me walking into the woods.

The reason I'm proud of this doe is because it was a 175-200 yard shot with a muzzleloader. Hit her a little high but got the job done.

Don't believe this picture has been posted before..........The best whitetail hunting day of my life!
It was just the Patriarch of the deer camp and I that stayed at the shack the previous night. Upon getting up and having breakfast, I looked at Tim and said... "We going out in this?" (Winds were gusting up to nearly 40 MPH) He said... "What else we gonna do, sit here and stare at each other all day?"
So we go. Not withstanding trees are snapping, breaking and falling during a low snow winter.
I chose a place to walk a ridge, not all that high, to it's end against a swamp. Got comfy sitting on my pack not expecting to see anything let alone HEAR something!
But I did, a stick breaking below me. Looking in that direction, a set of antlers were spotted coming out of the tag alders, less than 20 yards from my perch coming out of the swamp. Two or three steps later the one on the left (my right in the picture) was down! WHOO WHOO!.
So, like the idiot I am, I light a cigarette. Wouldn't ya know it, I hear another snap of a twig or stick from the same area.
Yup you guessed it.....as I looked to the Heavens asking if this was happening again, The Good Lord sent another nice buck to me. Tim and my hunts were completed on November 13, 2007 in the morning before 9:00 A.M. . Tim said my two shots were 9 minutes apart. WHAT A DAY!!!
