Our house is a one-story bungalow in what was a small city, that became surrounded by a sprawling big city. Several dogs are the early warning/deterrent. The utility/HD long gun is an 870P, loaded with 00 buck, equipped with a Surefire Weaponlight forend and a Vang-comp barrel. The reason is simple: My employer is a police agency, and it behooves me to use one of my "approved" weapons in a defensive shooting, whether I am on or off the clock. My approved ammo choices are 00 or 4 buck. While I prefer carbines for HD, the fact is that the 870 is a darn good weapon. I can back up the 870 with my SIG P229R or one of several Ruger .357 revolving pistols.

Norinco SKS with 10 in the well generally kept in the walk-in closet. Generally Russian manufacture soft-tips.
The 870 is always around somewhere. I keep just 5 rounds on its stock. 3 buckshot and 2 slugs.
I sometimes live in the city and sometimes in a small town. I almost feel more secure in an apartment with the building lock as my back-up.

mine thinks he's about 4 pounds(he's 148 lbs off) and hides under the table when the newspaper get's delivered.

I've a unconverted thumbhole Saiga in 7.62 with a couple loaded magazines.
My opinion is worth what you pay for it, but Birdshot is not a self defense load and a stocked shotgun is better than a pistol gripped shotgun. But still, use what you like, it's your life not mine.

inner security: hi-point JHP [230FMJ] / Romarm WASR-3 [scoped][bi-pod][30rnd] and depending which mag i pick up [55FMJ]/[62FMJ]
and the Nylon 66 for the slow ones

Last night and the night before, an old ex-NYPD 4" S&W M&P loaded with Federal 158gr. LSWC-HP +P. The night before that, my Glock 19 loaded with 147gr. Winchester White Box.
In my home, the only thing more useless for self-defense than a shotgun would be a cavalry lance.
