What do you like best about handling your gun?

Great Post!

One of my best friends is a fanatic about high quality fishing gear and handguns. One day I went by his house to have a few beers because I knew he was home and his family was out of town. I knocked on the door and heard him tell me to come in, as I walked into his TV room, he had several pistols out on the table and several rod and reel outfits sitting around in various stages of cleaning and storage. "Hey man what are you doing with all your guns and fishing stuff?" I asked, wondering if he had been shooting or fishing without telling me..."Awww, to be honest I just like taking it out and remembering how it FEELS in my hands" he replied....maybe the most honest thing he has ever said to me in his life.

I pull my pistols out and fiddle with them, make sure they are clean and lubed and free of fingerprints etc. If I had to answer the question as to WHY I do this...especially my favorite 1911...Its how the gun just melts into my hands, it feels like part of me and it is a combination of comfort that it is there if I need it and remembrance of past days shooting.

I like to take my various guns out on occasion and just look them over and appreciate what I have. In the past, I had nice guns, but then would have to sell them to pay bills. After I turned about 40, I decided that, no matter what, I will not sell or trade any of my guns. I only have a handful of them, and they aren't the best guns in the world, but to me they are special -- especially the ones I have worked up accurate loads for!

When I pick up and look at my S&W 500 Magnum (4" barrel), I am still amazed and in awe at the power that was invented to be fired in your hands!

When I take my 642 snubby out of my pocket, I usually get the lint out of the Robert Mika pocket holster and make sure the gun is still going to fire. Occasionally, I'll take it out into the barn and shoot five rounds into an 8x8 piece of beam I have -- just to make sure that it fires. So far, I've put nearly 500 rounds through it without any misfires. After S&W smoothed the action and trigger, I was a bit concerned after I got it back that it could possibly not fire (too light a hammer spring?). But then, S&W was who did the work! When I look at the dented primers, they are all dented real well. There is no question that the firing pin, hammer and mainspring are all doing their job!

I used to clean my guns a lot more than I now do. I do check them to be sure they aren't rusting at all, however I DO keep my house pretty dry and my basement is bone dry.

Pug Mug.....that is so sad !!

....A good gun is like a good woman, she needs to be petted occasionally, caressed lovingly, kept clean and safe and lightly lubed. In return she will comfort you, protect you, feed you if necessary and be a joy to you just to look at. I love my guns and my wife. Neither is "just a tool" to me. :p

I use all my guns so they all have minor scuffs and scratches. I like to look them over and try to remember where they picked up each little knick in the finish. The polymer pistols I own don't have wear marks on them, its sad. I look over my glock or my xd and its like they dont have a soul
