What do you think of a 22-250 with a 1-12 26" barrel

We are talking some old time stuff. Loaded to equal pressures the 257 Roberts does not give up anything to 243 or 6mm. When I hunted with the Roberts the 75gr. bullet was doing a chronographed 3500fps. That was with a 1:12 in a Douglas #5 weight barrel on a 98 action. Game is as dead with the 6mm's as the 25 calibers. I think if you take a look at varmint hunting bullets weights the difference between 6mm-06 and 25-06 narrows seriously. Sure enough the path of least resistance be a 25-06. Rifle looneys do not take the path of lease resistance.:) Incidentally, the chamber in my 6mm-06 was cut with a reamer that allowed use of the 270 case.

That would be cool to use the 270 case.

I really did not see any real benefit on the 270 over the 30-06 case save the case neck length. Mostly likely the 270 case would be a better proposition for necking down.

I’ve always wondered what a good 270 case necked down would be like. I sure do like that long neck!
That would be interesting. Blow the sides out, but leave the neck long. My question is, would that increase barrel life?

My 22" sporter barrel is finally losing accuracy. I've been running a 53 VMAX at 3990 in it. I'm kicking around keeping with that bullet and getting a 26" barrel since the terminal performance is unreal.
Option 2 is a 24" 1-8 twist for the longer bullets.
I don't shoot over 500 yards since my property ends at 520. Most of the coyotes I shoot are inside 200.
I also love not having ricochets using the VMAX. I'll worried the match bullets won't break apart as readily and there are cows everywhere.

I think you are on the right track Bfh. I would not do the 26" barrel and stick with your 22" barrel and the 53 grain V-Max's but that's me. With the 1/12 twist you can do 55 grain bullets and maybe even 63 grain bullets and not lose any accuracy. I personally would not do the 1/8 twist since you have a range restriction but I like where you are going with this. kwg

22-250: That's pretty fast for a 53gr. bullet in a 22" barrel. What kind of rifle are we talking about? May I ask what load you are using?
CFE223 in a Savage Axis. I'm under Hogdon max. My IMR4064 load was only 3870 for reference.

Seriously, might be worthwhile to consider getting another Axis with that level of performance. Also, it would depend on what your barrel change options are. Is the Axis set up like other rifles in that line where barrel changes are no big deal? I don't know anything about the Axis.

Same barrel nut system. I was just going to switch to a new barrel and figured a little longer would be better.
This has been my show off gun.

First up, I did a barrel swap on a 110. It was an unconditional success. Many barrel makers offer barrels for the swap in a Savage action. Based on my experience a longer barrel is more desirable. No shorter than 24". Do some research on how 53 grain or similar bullets stand up at top volatility in the fast twist for heavy match bullets. Make sure the Axis will take one of these barrel swaps.

I used YouTube videos to get some basic info on a swap. I had gotten a wrench and headspace gauge by mail order from Midway. The barrel was an Adams&Bennett was also from Midway. I'd look at Shaw to get some idea of what's out there. I have been scolded about sharing the secret of A&B barrels. There were rough but give excellent performance. That's extra since A&B barrels are history.

With the accuracy I got from a Green Mountain mauser barrel, I wish they did Savage prefits. I'm looking at Shilen and EABCO.

I know Shilen. Green Mountain had a close out of A&B barrels. That puts an interesting spin on who actually made A&B barrels. Might take a look at Pac-Nor. These name brands barrels many take time. I know nothing of EABCO barrels. Are you overbuilding an entry level rifle?

I like my rifle to look simple, but shoot like crazy.
I do the same thing with trucks. My daily was an old step side with a 410 inch small block in it.
It's all about the surprise factor.
