What does your 930 SPX say on the barrle?

Does your 930 SPX, say, “930 SPX” ? or merely 930 TM as does my own.

Ya know, it’s hard to get good help these days!

At some retail outlets, stores, and dealerships, just asking where something is located can put a blank look onto a store employees face, and they might provide some erroneous directions instead of seeking out the experience of someone more vested in the industry/store. Or such questions can make them dissolve altogether, vanishing into thin air and never to be seen again… well, ‘cept on payday. They usually resurface then.

In fact, I refuse to call some dealerships actual dealerships…. I just call ‘em sellers. Many don’t deal anymore anyhow, handing down a take it or leave it offer to the buyer … Fewer & fewer are pricing their goods competitively… and many of the staff have less product knowledge than me and I’ve been out of the gun club for about 30 years now.

Consequently I just want to double check here with knowledgeable folks as to how Mossberg currently lables their weapons/long guns. It seems the last Mossberg employee couldn’t find out that info for me in a full working day.

When I called Mossberg yesterday and gave my serial number to my new 930 the lady I spoke with said indeed it was a 930.

Fine.

The problem with that is I paid for a 930 SPX… not a Home Defense 930. Telling her that too, she then said, “Yes, it’s a 930 SPX.”

So I asked her, “Why then, isn’t SPX printed onto the barrel after 930, instead of 930 TM….

There sure is enough room for 3 more letters.

She went on to say it was made this year. Asked me to send pics and thereafter would get back to me… I did.

She has not. Well, not yet.

So…. How does OFM lable their shotguns these days?

Does your 930 SPX, say, “930 SPX” ? or merely 930 TM as does my own.

If you think about this it is important on a couple of levels.

Resale…. Fraud…. Insurance claims… parts ordering… after market accessories getting… and a bunch of confusion across the board from the distributors to the sellers, to us, the end users.

Thanks for all the help.

I just bought a new SPX a couple of weeks ago, haven't even had a chance to shoot it yet. I pulled it out of the box and looked at the barrel and, like yours, it says 930TM, however, if you look at the letter you'll see that the "TM" is smaller than the other letters, set half a line up, and has a small line under it, which leds me to believe that the the "TM" is for "TradeMark". Also, if you look at the label on the box your gun came in you'll see that where the model number is listed is say 930 with the "TM" (TradeMark) logo right after. And, for the record, my gun is not labeled "SPX" anywhere on it, the barrle and the receiver both only have "MOSSBERG 930" stamped on them.
I'd quit worrying about it if I were you.

If your barrel has the LPA "M-16 style" front sight then you have an SPX barrel, if it just has a bead, then you have a "Security" barrel...

As WC explained, the TM is for trademark....

18.5 inch barrel, raised LPA sight on the end. 930TradeMark barrel.
Not at all worried that I somehow didn't get an SPX model, I know better.

Why would Mossberg mark some barrels "SPX" when that barrel can be used in any 930 and any 930 barrel can be used in an "SPX"?

THANKS! Good to know.

Well, that's the concern. Mine has neither! Neither the LPA winged sight nor the bead.

Mine has a huge front post resting atop a arc of steel welded to a platform with huge ears to either side. Overall it comes up easily an inch above the barrle and will interfere with attaching a light to the top side pick rail. Unless it's changed, it forces me into an underneath light.

The up side is you can hang it from a curtain rod, wire, or shelf using the front sight alone! It's also a great little back scratcher. it might serve as a can opener too, though I've not tried that yet.

it confuses the issue as to it's heritage should I resell it down the road.

It bugs me for those listed reasons above as much as my perhaps overpaying for it. I've also found thus far some other irregularities within this purchase. Such as the seller's telling me the PG option was no longer available! Can't get it so forget it. Mossberg says otherwise, and was somewhat suprised to hear that tid bit.

I sincerely appreciate the thoughts thus far. Tanks.

fourth....

I suppose makers can put whatever they wish where ever they wish to put it.

I'm merely going on experience with past gun ownership. Each one had it's emlem or model indicated right on the barrle. My Ruger Security Six, said exactly that.. my SW Model 29, said as much too. Even a 22 cal semi from Sears had it's celebrity endorsement by Ted Williams stamped on it. Some few other guns I've owned had all their info on them as a rule rather than an option. So my expectations are plain.

Definitely you have a point. If not inscribed on the barrle, then such an extreme duty weapon deserves it's noteriety emblazoned somewhere on it... 'receiver' ? Stock? Somewhere noticeable.

What could it hurt.

OK... if it ain't there these days, it ain't there. Too bad. It would add to the esthetic and lend itself to having greater pride of ownership as it sets itself firmly... noticeably as something more special or unique.

Kind of like a Camaro and a Z28 Camaro. well, kind of...

If the barrel on your 930 looks similar to this...
Mossberg1.jpg

You may be assured it's an SPX. Well, it's an SPX until you take off the LPA sights, and then it's just a 930.

"Kind of like a Camaro and a Z28 Camaro. well, kind of..."
Exactly so... remember every part on a Camaro will fit on a Z28 and every part on a Z28 will fit on a bog-standard Camaro. (of course fitting just 1 rear disk brake to a standard drum rear axle isn't possible). The only way to be SURE a Camaro is a Z28 is by the VIN, no matter what the decal on the door says.

Well, it is similar as best I can tell from that photo...

How did you post that pic?

When I tried, it asks me for a URL... like to my own website or something.

Re VIN
Exactly.

And why I feel stamping out a few more letters into a barrle once it has been assigned is of no consequence.

it sure will help avoid confusion down the road... just like now, with the Black Water itteration of the SPX.

then what is next?

the Black Water SPX Blue Tick? Blood tracker? Gator Tamer? Swamp King? Delta Squad? Forced Entry? Or my personal fav… How ‘bout I take just a little off the top!

Manufacturers are always gonna know inside the confines of their own service depts which parts go where, and with what... but how about the buyers. Shouldn't we have things more clear cut and defined? Sure we should as it'll help out in ways I've already listed... not the least of which is resale.

How did you post that pic?
When I tried, it asks me for a URL... like to my own website or something.

That is exactly what it is looking for.
One way is to find a picture you like online, right click and choose "View Picture", and then copy the address that shows in the address bar.

The other way is to save a picture you like to your personal computer and then post that picture to a site such as PhotoBucket, ImageShack or TinyPic.

Either way, once you have the url to the picture you can paste that address as a picture using the
tags.
If you replace the ( ) parenthesis in ...(IMG)http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f159/unnamed-source/DSC00258.jpg(/IMG) with the proper square brackets [], you get - -

And before anyone says anything... that's not rust, it's just a low voltage bulb. :)

Super! Great! I’ll do just that!

I have been talking with Mossberg service since Wednesday. Pretty nice folks there. We finally came up with a reasonable solution. My Seller/distr’b ran some bad info down to me as I was seeking/buying this weapon. Mossberg is going to make it as right as they can by sending me the PG butt stock to replace the one I have on hand now. I’ll return to them this one.

Thanks for the help.
