This NY Times article claims to show what we already know as the most blatant reason for increased gun sales, the fear that this may be the last opportunity to do so.

Their charts show increased sales just after mass shootings, Presidential cries for restrictions, and times of regional stress, i.e., hurricanes.

Thank you Capt. Obvious for that incredible insight. And thank you Mr. President for inadvertently supporting the firearms industry.

I heard an interview with a dealer from California on the radio he said something to the effect of "after sandy hook people bought guns because they were afraid the Government was going to ban something, this time they're buying them because they're scared and want some protection."

I wonder how many first time buyers their are right now in California, either way all we can do is speculate and at the end of the day it probably doesn't really matter anyway.

Back in the 80s you'd see tables full of old Winchester lever guns, hunting rifles and shotguns. There were some AR15s around, but it was a small niche.

Now there's very little at gun shows except hot and cold running AR15s, AKs and "tactical" everything.

If the goal of the Assault Weapons ban was to get rid of AR15s, it was the most spectacularly unsuccessful law since Prohibition.

I was in 2 gun shops over the weekend and there were first time buyers taking tests for their FSC cards to buy firearms in all of them. Same at another store the weekend before. They were all busy as hell.

People from all walks of life, saw a lot of women, one guy had 2 Sig AR15's and 2 Eotechs on the counter, had to be $5K worth of stuff, his wife next to him just had a deer in the headlights look.

Bought a M&P Shield myself and am looking to get the CCW process going.

When New York's Governor Cuomo rammed the "SAFE" Act through our legislature, standard AR and AK pattern rifles became a thing of the past. Ownership was grandfathered, but no new ones could be bought or brought into the state, and currently-owned ones could only be sold out-of-state. Bad timing for me, because I was just contemplating the purchase of my first AR.

Somebody on one forum or another said, "Well, I guess from now on the only choice is going to be Saiga, SKS, or Mini-14." I've now got one of each.

Does a M1a qualify as being an AK-type weapon?

If you can buy a Mini-14, how about the civilian version of a real m-14?

Or did I misread your post; that you have a grandfathered Mini-14.

You can still buy a Mini-14. You can't buy an M1A because it has a flash hider. I think some dealers are making NY-compliant M1As by removing the flash hiders, but they're charging extra for them, of course. Paying more to get less: that's life in NY.
