November 17th, 1985, 13 years old, about 5 miles outside of Crockett, Texas. Wood stocked Remington 700ADL .30-06, 3-9X32 Tasco Scope, Federal 165 Grain BTSP. I was sitting on a platform in a tree about 20 feet up watching an open field, and after taking a 3 finger pinch of Copenhagen Snuff a Whitetail Spike started walking out in the middle of the field. The little buck was grazing about 120 yards away, I put the crosshairs right behind the shoulder, and fired. The spike kicked in the after burners and began running towards the really thick stuff, so I fired again, hitting him in the back ham. At the shot the deer turned almost completely sideways while still running so I shot again and missed. The deer ran 100 yards into the hardwoods, crossed a creek, and expired at the top of the far bank. The buck field dressed all of 90 pounds, and it amazed me how much punishment that little deer took and still ran that far.
I noticed a whole bunch of folks have taken their first deer with shotguns. My second deer was taken with a Remington Sportsman 48 12 Gauge with Remington Sluggers.
Just my .02,
