Im looking forward to purchasing a new hand gun within the next 2-3 months. I think im pretty picky on handguns so i narrowed down my choices to a few. Im a little picky when it comes to handguns.

1. Sig P226- i love the look but the price tag is to high

2. Sig P220 -love the look but price tag is about $100-$150 cheaper than the p226 and everyone i held had the short handle and just about a finger and a half be off the handle

3.Beretta 92fs-I always admired the look of this type of gun but it dont really have the weight that i want and the caliber (.40) has the same price tag as the P226

4.Taurus PT92-nothing but good reviews about this gun and i love the weight

5.Taurus PT945-I recently acquired an interest in this gun when i saw it in the store yesterday, i love the weight and also like the similar looks that this gun have compared to the p226 & p220, even though
the specs show that this is the smallest of the bunch it feels much heavier than all the others and nothing but good reviews about this gun also. I

6. Ruger P90- the thing that i really dont like about this gun is frame, it looks plastic for some reason

If there any other handguns that look like the P226 or even the Pt945 with better quality feel free to add.

Handguns vary greatly so maybe if you can answer a few questions we can get you a better answer.

  • What do you want to do with this gun? CCW? Home Defense? Competition? Hunting? Plinkin' at the range?

  • What is your budget?

  • Do you have a caliber preference (based on the ones you listed it looks like 9mm, .45 or .40)?

  • If you don't have a preference are you looking for pros/cons of caliber choice?

  • Do you have any preference for material (steel or polymer ... based on your original post I'm guessing you'd prefer steel over polymer)?

  • How much shooting experience do you have?
Picking guns is kinda like picking underwear so you'll likely get a ton of opinions.

personal protection, home defense and shooting at the range from time to time

no more than $650

caliber i would say .40 or .45

pretty much all steel or metal im not a fan of the plastic frames

i have about 13-14 yrs under my belt

I would avoid the Tauruses (or would that be Tauri?) ... not because of any quality problems but because if you ever need their customer service you'll end up pulling your hair out.

With a little hunting you should be able to find a Beretta 96 (the .40 version of the 92) in your price range.

This guy has some good prices on SIGs (including some nickel P220s for $595 ... then you gotta add for shipping and transfer fees with a local dealer) Really can't go wrong with a P220.

As a CZ owner myself, I can't get by without recommending one of those as well.

Go shoot them, and which ever one jumps in the truck for the ride home, wins.

Really up to you, they are all well made guns, and your body isn't mine, so until you try them all out, and decide, it's just a bunch of people telling you what works for THEM

I really like the PX4's, but I actually think the older Beretta Cougar (8000 series) they are still being made by Stoeger in Turkey, on the original Beretta machinery, and are in the 400 to 500 range new, and come in all your flavors (9, .40 and .45)

Beretta Px4 40 or 45

DA/SA, DAO, C-model

550.oo NIB 40cal

640.oo NIB 45cal

Can find them for a hair less, but..

Having had a Px4 40cal now for over 3yrs, over 10k "flawless rounds" they're - soft recoil wise, fall back on target balance/quickly, because of their rotating barrels, and is right up there with my 2 Sig P229/40's as far as forgiveness, soft recoil, accuracy, etc., goes. Both Sigs with just over 4k flawless rounds, apiece, as well.

And, like my Sigs, the Beretta Px4's are as easy, so simple, so fast, to disassemble, inspect, clean, and reassemble, bar none..

This is a Px4 40 G-model (decocker-only) DA/SA

Not my gun: F-model decocker/safety in-one DA/SA

Sig or Beretta Px4, can't go wrong.. having all in 40cal

JMOfartO:

If there were Sigs in the mix I certainly wouldn't be considering a Taurus...

But that's just me.:)

Best Wishes,

had many Taurus guns and only 1 was sent in for warranty work sent (ultra light 44mag) it from my FFL and was back in 6 weeks not sure when he mailed it or when it came back but 6 weeks and the gun was fine. still have Taurus guns and will still buy another when a deal comes around thought, about a 92 today for $300..

way i see it if my smith, browning, etc acted up i would have to pay a gun smith to fix it , if Taurus acts up no matter how long it takes you get it fixed for free.charter arms are as bad if not worse we had a 22mag for 1 week and they wanted us to send it on our dime back to them, took it back to the dealer and let him deal with them. wont buy any new charter, but i have an old target bull dog that is perfect

I'd keep my eye out for a CPO Sig 226 you can usally find one at a good gun show for around $550 or less. In fact Topgun supply has some police turn ins for around $475.00 for a 9mm and a CPO in 40 for around $590. I will add there are a few guns out there that do look like a Sig, but don't shoot like one.

You have some nice choices on your list. Be sure to shoot all of them in a range trial of your own making before you select one for purchase; you might surprise yourself and find a pistol that comes right out of the blue but that best fits your hand and eye. As to that, I'd add a Walther P99 to the list. In my mind, it stacks up against anything on the market, at least for me.

Good luck.

You really need to go out and shoot them (rent at range or borrow some buddies). You can only go so far without shooting. As for the price, I seriously wouldn't worry about it. Within one or two years, the cost of the ammo you shoot will surpass the cost of the pistol by quite a bit. If it means waiting a month longer to get it, then wait. The pistol will easily last your and your children's lifetime.

Of your selections, I'd give equal consideration to the 226 and the 92FS, but make it a 96 so you get .40.

See which one feels the best in your hand and go with it.

I recently got rid of many of my Sigs because they feel like I'm holding a Coke can! The grip just doesn't work with my hand.

I have had nothing but trouble with Taurus autos: maybe I'm alone in this, maybe not. On a side note I've had nothing but very good experiences with their revolvers. Go figure.

You'll be happy with either the Sig or Beretta, they're both outstanding firearms.

My Stoeger Cougar 8000 has been absolutely flawless with over 2000 rds fired. No noticeable wear. It has been fed every factory brand & configuration of ammo readily available. Decent trigger (which smooths out nicely) Easy to strip ,clean & maintain, Beretta mags are $20. Tough to beat for $369 NIB.
