It seems that they have dried up and its been quite awhile since there are been some quality 98k recaptures out there. It seems that since Classic Arms was sold, they are shifting away from the C&R market.

So how out there has non peened, quality 98ks? Is the market just about dried up?

Not only has the availabilty dried up but IMO interest has dried up too. THere's a lot of folks who got into AR's the last couple of years and loss interest in milsurps.

Horsemany:

"...lost interest in milsurps". What good timing! :)

That's probably the only reason why Lee-Enfields and the low-priced ammo can be found at all, despite the apparent (they say) spillover effect from the "Band Of Brothers" movies etc.

One problem could be that so many German Mausers were captured by the Russians (altered/mixed) and are not as original as those battlefield rifles which were captured by western armies.

It's the ups and downs of a fickle market. In the early 1950s Colt stopped making the SAA because they couldn't hardly give them away. Then a bunch of westerns showed up on TV and the SAA was back in style.

They're all sitting as actions in a gunsmith's drawer waiting to be built into something fun. At the moment, I have five mauser actions waiting to be built (one german, one turk, two swedes, and one siamese).

I love mausers. I'm still kicking myself in the ass for not picking one up a few years ago. This was before I started reloading and was unsure on ammo availability.

Everybody should have at least one.

Even if they are no longer original.

Hmmm... I think I may know why they are getting hard to find...

SaxonPig - I can always tell your posts without reading the name because of the font and background of your milsurp rifle photos.

In regards to the 98's, if you're looking for a piece to show off, then you probably want one of the matching number ones. However, there are a handful that Bubba got ahold of and cut up. Those can be had for a good price if you're looking for a good shooting gun. Other than that, I'd start pointing fingers at half the people on this board as to why there aren't too many around...hehe.
