I am the owner of an OA AR-15. I tried to visit their website today and was directed to a page advising they hadn't renewed their domain name. Their sister website Oly Owner's Assn is also down. Anyone know what has happened to them? Out of business? Bankruptcy?

From what I've seen, they were three steps above Vulcan. Similar business practices, too... basically, their parts suppliers where whomever they hadn't p*ssed off in a while. Cast receivers, shoddy builds, etc...

No big loss. I wouldn't be surprised if they *were* bankrupt, especially since home-building ARs is so popular now.

Or they just forgot to renew the domain name.. it happens. It expired on the 23rd, Network Solutions gives a 7 day grace period, so it would be down today. I bet they come in Monday, check voicemail and realize e-mail doesn't work, and then pay the bill.

The AR-15 I purchased from them has been trouble-free. They haven't used cast receivers for some time now. They would have received notice their domain was up for renewal.

You would be amazed how often that is missed. The e-mail address on record might not be an address they use or check. I see it all the time, where we get a call from a customer stating their web site is down/e-mail does not work because they did not renew the domain name.

Of course it is possible they are out of business, but an expired domain name over a weekend is not enough to base that on. Check in late Monday, if it is still down then it is likely something happened.

I drive by their place at least twice a day and I can say that they are up and running. It looks like they are running three shifts, five days a week. I also have two of their rifles, had them for many years and have never had a problem with either of them. FWIW.:D

They are regular exhibitors at the Washington Arms Collectors shows, and this coming weekend there is a show at the Puyallup Fairgrounds. If they are there, I will inquire on the status of the web site. Fair enough?

Please do. I am one of those who owns an OA AR and I love it. It's not up to the same standards as the high end models, but it's not junk, either. Let us know what is going on, if you find out.

As near I can tell, Olympic makes a low end AR-15.

They make some good stuff, too. Their stainless ultra match barrels are pretty nice hardware.

well if you hang out at AR15.com, you'll quickly discern that if it's not a $1,500 LMT build or a Colt, it's #$**# garbage.

give me a break......we're not all building ARs for use on the SWAT team.

I've managed to miss my own domain renewal, several times. The registrar sends an email, and won't use the registered domain as the contact email account. Since that's the one I use...

Oly might not be the top end, but it's good to have choices. Any US arms manufacturer going out of business is a bad thing, AFAIC.

What's wrong with Hesse? I have an AK built on a Hesse receiver and it's a great shooter. No canted sights, gas blocks, etc. The finish is a little rough, but nothing that couldn't be touched up and, hey, it's an AK anyway. The wood hand guards look pretty decent, too. Black poly stock and pistol grip...

Hesse is now Vulcan Arms. They are known for putting out turkeys on a consistent basis.

I see. Is that with their complete builds? Mine wasn't built by Hesse, but a Hesse receiver was used. Seems plenty sturdy and durable to me. AK reliable all day long, too.

People just in this thread who bashed olympic arms and used incomplete and incorrect information to do so:

The antis love it when gun owners hope a gun manufacturer goes out of business. Thanks you two.

So why do so many of us tolerate that childish behavior?

I always thought they had terrible quality and customer service. They are just a step above Vulcan/Hesse in that respect.

If they go under, Boliva will have to look elsewhere for M-16 parts.

The only time my Olympic 9mm has jammed on me was when I was using a crappy Socom mag block.

It's less expensive that the Colt/RRA, has cheaper mags, does not require a dedicated lower with unique parts, and would work fine with a Bullet Button.

ETA: Yay, this is my 1,000th post!

I'm still down on Olympic for making that goofy AK pistol that got the cheap Chinese steel core ammo banned as AP. The issue became moot a few years later, but still a lot of good cheap ammo was made un-importable by this ill-conceived product.

But what I've seen of their ARs seem to work fine.
