I am looking for a low price on an 1100 (oldie type) barrell 18 1/2 inch.

I want Remington brand, might consider the better aftermarket.

I want no gizmos, just a simple brass bead, no rib, fixed choke.

(Don't mention Cabellas, they sent two that didn't FIT!!!!)

I'm not aware the 1100 barrel was ever made in a 18&1/2" length by Remington ? You may have to find a standard length barrel and have it cut to the shorter length .

There is a concern however with doing that on the 1100 as it is gas operated and I'm not sure you will be able to get one that short and still have reliable function. Even if you open up the gas port on the barrel there can still be timing problems.

Then there would also be the lack of a choke on a cut barrel.

AFAIK the standard 'short' barrel for the 1100 is a 21" rifle sighted (slug) version. The 1100 is a gas gun, and whacking off too much tube in front of the barrel's gas ports is likely going to make the gun crotchety about functioning.

Not to say it can't be done or hasn't been done, mind you. Just something to be aware of. The gas ports can be adjusted in size (opened up to a degree) and thinwall choke tubes might be a possibility also, but you're beginning to look at twice the cost of a standard slug barrel by the time you get a standard tube and get the custom work done. That's pricing on the basis of a used slug barrel at that, around here they can sometimes be had for $175 or so. Haven't priced a new one lately.

We have two 1100's here with 21" factory barrels. They are twin bead vent rib barrels and we like them very much.
I have an 18" "custom" that I picked up at a local shop but I've never tried it. It may even have a VR but I don't recall.
The only one's I've seen shorter than 21" were "custom".

When you get around to trying that 18" barrel 1100 would you please post results ?

My concern with that short of barrel is wether the length of time between when the shot load passes the gas port and exits the barrel is sufficient to supply enough gas to the piston for function. Even if the port holes are made a bit larger .

I would like to know if it works OK as I would hate to cut a barrel that short and not be able to get it to function. (ending up with a scrap barrel )

Mike,

Are those Special Field guns??

The only 21" barrels (12 ga. that is) Remington has in the parts list currently are the fully rifled barrel with a cantilever scope mount or rifle sights, and various styles of smoothbore, all with rifle sights. I was looking at the list that is one click away (and an Adobe Acrobat load) from
http://www.remington.com/support/parts/partsinfo.htm . I never saw a barrel on an 1100 like that, not that I am an 1100 afficianado. That sounds like a 'turkey' barrel. There is a 21" barrel with a vent rib on the currently cataloged 'Youth Turkey' model, but it's a 20 ga. It's also on the LT-20 Synthetic Youth model. Haven't seen on in 12 ga. but it wouldn't surprise me if they'd made them. After all, I don't get out much...

mnrivrat,
Will do on the test, whenever that happens.

Lee,
The one is Mrs. 9mmMike's Special Field 20 ga.
The other is my 12 ga with, I am guessing, a SF barrel. I liked my bride's SF so much that I built my own. I even found an English stock for it. I bought the barrel used. The receiver is a magnum but the gun is a 2 3/4" now.
I really like it but I shoot the 870's more. It does get loaned-out quite a bit though.

Mike

edited to add that both these guns are fixed choke, mod.

Not sure how the 11-87 would compare to the 1100 in functioning with a short barrel, but Remington makes an 11-87 LE in 14". Standard 18".
I would think if you played with the gas ports as has been suggested, you could make it work.

The choke would be another issue.
